Pregnancy after 35? See what the consequences

Must read

Is 35 the right age to have your first child? While more and more women are opting to have their first child in their thirties, this is referred to in medical terms as “advanced” maternal age. However, you should not be afraid of pregnancy after 35 years, although it is associated with the risk of certain complications, doctors point out.

The number of pregnant women over 35 has doubled since the 1990s. From year to year, the average age of pregnant women increases. Even 30-40 years ago, women gave birth at the age of 24-26. Women who later decide to have a baby are more emotionally mature, willing to consciously experience motherhood and prepare well for it.

What are the risks of pregnancy after age 35?

When a pregnant woman is 35 years of age or older, the risk of complications from a medical point of view increases. The pregnancy doctor can suggest prenatal tests and closely monitor the health of the pregnant woman.

The most common complications in mothers over 35 include higher miscarriage rates, genetic disorders, high blood pressure or gestational diabetes, says fertility consultant Dr. Ritu Hinduja, quoted in Times of India.

Are late births an indication for caesarean section?

As a rule, the “old” age of the mother is not an indication for caesarean section, but the pathological conditions that are such an indication are more common, doctors explain. You should always look at the patient and carefully analyze the risk during pregnancy and childbirth. But if the child is correctly positioned and the woman has no concomitant diseases, then there are no contraindications for natural childbirth.

Complications of pregnancy after 35 years

Pregnancy after 35 years of age is associated with a risk of complications. These include:

  • preeclampsia,

  • Diabetes during pregnancy

  • premature birth or low birth weight,

  • stillbirth.

How to reduce the risk of complications?

  • regularly check your health,

  • take folic acid

  • exercise regularly,

  • quit smoking,

  • stop drinking alcohol
