The eye is a very sensitive organ that responds to all the painful conditions that the body struggles with. It is in the eyes that the nerve endings associated with all internal organs are located. Red eyes are a symptom of an allergy or a cold. However, they can also reveal more serious diseases.

What diseases can be read in the eyes?

Lines or spots that appear at the corners of the eyes and on the eyelids are tufts of yellow or yellowish color. These are cholesterol deposits that occur when cholesterol levels are too high. They indicate hypercholesterolemia - a genetically determined disease. It raises blood levels of both total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein, the so-called bad cholesterol. It is estimated that about 10 million people worldwide live with familial hypercholesterolemia, accounting for 40 percent. of them do not know about it. If left untreated, the disease can lead to a heart attack. Therefore, it is important to identify the disease at an early stage, doctors say.

A brain tumor

A change in pupil size, sometimes in only one eye, may indicate brain cancer. People who develop cancer also complain of double vision and loss of peripheral vision. One of the accompanying symptoms that can be seen on the eye is the drooping of the eyelid. Symptoms vary depending on the location of the brain tumor. Some brain tumors are asymptomatic at first, and they do not show up until the structures become large and raise intracranial pressure. Others cause ailments from the nervous system from the very beginning. Brain tumors are in 10th place in the list of oncological diseases that most often lead to death. It is estimated that more than 2,000 people in Poland die every year from a brain tumor.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. The inflammation caused by lupus can affect many body systems, including the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, lungs, and eyes. Lupus can cause skin changes around the eyelids, dry eyes, inflammation of the white outer layer of the eyeball, changes in retinal blood vessels, and damage to the nerves that control eye movement, which affects vision. Nine out of ten people with this condition are women.
