According to the head of the Finnish parliament’s defense committee, Petteri Orpo, developments in Russia look bleak, as there are only bad scenarios on the horizon. “It also means sending more troops to Ukraine, with an increased risk of getting more powerful weapons. According to the second scenario, Putin’s regime is weakened, which may lead to a change of power in Russia. Unfortunately, it is not at all clear that the alternative that will replace Putin is something better from our point of view. Now it is impossible to compromise either on military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine or on sanctions against Russia. Ukraine needs more and stronger weapons. This also applies to humanitarian aid and sanctions, which should be increased and strengthened.“.
Orpo added that Russia has declared war not only on Ukraine, but also on the West.
“Now we must be strong, and Russia must be isolated once and for all. I am outraged by the talk about the admission of Russians to some sporting events - this, of course, should not be. It is also necessary to cut off energy flows from Russia so that the ways could not finance their war. The security of Finland as a neighboring country of dangerous Russia would be strengthened if NATO troops were stationed here on a permanent basis“.
According to Petteri Orpo, Finland should urgently start an open debate about what kind of NATO member Finland wants to be, as well as begin to influence the solution of issues within NATO.
