The mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov, said that Ukraine should gradually seek compromises with the Russian Federation. He expressed this opinion in an interview with the Italian edition of Corriere della Sera.
According to the mayor, Ukraine needs to negotiate step by step, gradually seek compromises with Russia and avoid confrontations. In this war, you need to follow the path of negotiations.
“I believe that it is necessary to act politically, because the lives of millions of people are at stake. I don’t want to be misunderstood. Of course, I dream of returning to our 1991 borders,” Trukhanov said.
The official believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not given up on plans to take over Odessa, as he believes he is obsessed with the city. He believes that the city will not repeat the fate of Kharkov, since Putin wants to take him whole.
“I am not a pessimist, and I believe that we will win in the end. But the war remains long and hard. Our offensive on Kherson is slow, and Putin continues to hope for the encirclement of Odessa from the north to communicate with “Transnistria”, Trukhanov said.
Trukhanov also expressed his categorical position against the dismantling of the monument to Catherine II. He understands that a petition with 25 thousand signatures has been collected, but he is sure that there is no point in demolishing it.
Earlier, the mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov, opposed the renaming of Pushkinskaya Street in the city.
Recall that after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion, Odessa was subjected to heavy shelling by the Russians several times. At the end of July, when an agreement was reached on the export of Ukrainian grain, the invaders delivered one of the most powerful blows to the Odessa port.
