He just wanted to swim in the lake. This “something” entered his brain. Soon he died

Infection with this species of amoeba causes a dangerous parasitic disease called negleriasis. This disease is extremely dangerous for humans - mortality from it reaches 97%. In most cases, it leads to primary encephalitis and meningitis. Amoeba enters the human body through the nose, and then through the projection of olfactory cells in the nose penetrates the mucous membranes and enters the brain. Negleriasis develops rapidly, with a fatal outcome even after 72 hours.

After an apartment in Missouri became infected with negleria, the reservoir was closed. “The closure is a preventive response to a confirmed Naegleria fowleri infection in a Missouri resident who may have contracted the infection while swimming near this beach,” authorities said.

Currently, the appearance of the amoeba Naegleria fowleri has been recorded in Pakistan, New Zealand and the United States. In these countries, 154 cases of the disease have been registered over the past 60 years. Only four people managed to survive. The main symptoms of this disease are:

  • headache,
  • neck stiffness

Amoeba “Mózgożerna” is also found in Poland.

In Poland, the emergence of a health-threatening amoeba has also been observed. It first appeared in the 1980s in the warm waters of the Konin Lakes in Wielkopolska. Their climate differed significantly from other Polish lakes, as they were heated by nearby power plants. However, no cases of non-gleriosis infection have been registered in our country.

“The amoeba Naegleria fowleri can be found in Polish lakes. Through the sphenoid sinuses located at the base of the nose, it can enter the brain and cause changes there. In my practice there was such a patient - a young one who lives in many lakes. Suddenly he had a seizure. Imaging studies of the brain showed a tumor-like change, and after the operation it turned out that it was a parasitic change, ”describes prof. doctor hab. D., doctor Anna Boron-Kachmarskaya, specialist in infectious diseases.

“Of course, such infections are extremely rare, but it is worth noting that relaxing by the water comes with some risks. Any density of people carries the risk of infection,” adds prof. Boron-Kachmarskaya.
