In most cases, it leads to primary encephalitis and meningitis. Amoeba enters the human body through the nose, and then through the projection of olfactory cells in the nose penetrates the mucous membranes and enters the brain. Negleriasis develops rapidly, with a fatal outcome even after 72 hours.

In Poland, the emergence of a health-threatening amoeba has also been observed. It first appeared in the 1980s in the warm waters of the Konin Lakes in Wielkopolska. Their climate differed significantly from other Polish lakes, as they were heated by nearby power plants. However, no cases of non-gleriosis infection have been registered in our country.
“The amoeba Naegleria fowleri can be found in Polish lakes. Through the sphenoid sinuses located at the base of the nose, it can enter the brain and cause changes there. In my practice there was such a patient - a young one who lives in many lakes. Suddenly he had a seizure. Imaging studies of the brain showed a tumor-like change, and after the operation it turned out that it was a parasitic change, ”describes prof. doctor hab. D., doctor Anna Boron-Kachmarskaya, specialist in infectious diseases.
“Of course, such infections are extremely rare, but it is worth noting that relaxing by the water comes with some risks. Any density of people carries the risk of infection,” adds prof. Boron-Kachmarskaya.
