Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for Ahsoka Episode 2.
At the end of the premiere, Sabina Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) ended up at the end of a rather serious lightsaber injury. Fortunately, AhsokaThe second episode spends very little time trying to convince viewers that everything will be fine with the brave rebel. Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) seems upset that the star map was stolen by Bailan (Ray Stevenson) student Shin (And bath Sakhno), but she also seems to be somewhat concerned about Sabina’s well-being - even if the theft was due to Sabina’s disobedience to direct orders. Unfortunately, Shin not only took the Star Card, but also slipped away with unlocked star map and made sure the droids destroyed all of Sabina’s records of what was shown on the map.
Steph Green- who directed one of the most powerful episodes Boba Fett bookreturns to the director’s chair in “Toil and Trouble” and notes a noticeable difference between her directing style and Dave Filonix, felt almost immediately. Greene has a knack for making even the most mundane of scenes dynamic, partly because of the way she creates her scenes, but also because of the lens through which she looks at the galaxy. Scenes no longer feel static or disconnected from the big picture, and editing becomes clearer and more dynamic.
While Balan and Shin are one step closer to finding Thrawn on the distant planet of Siathos, Ahsoka is focused on luring one of the droids back to Sabina’s home on Lothal. With the severed droid head in hand, Ahsoka allows Sabina to attempt to hack into his memory banks in order to recover vital information about where Shin had gone. Although she nearly causes it to explode, Sabina is able to discover that the droid was originally from Corellia, the place where Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) once sheltered its resources, before the fall of the Empire.
Episode 2 Ahsoka focuses more on hunting Thrawn
Before the episode deals with Ahsoka’s journey to Corellia, he lingers on Sabina, who is out of action for most of the episode. Sabina and Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) discuss the uncomfortable tension between former master and apprentice, noting that it has been several years since their paths last crossed. This little comment further exacerbates some of the issues with Episode 1, which is that the timeline feels somewhat distorted and intentionally confusing. Ahsoka. It’s been ‘several years’ since Ezra Bridger’s victim And “years” since Ahsoka trained Sabina, however this overall timeline does not necessarily correspond to established events. Despite Ahsoka’s insistence that she doesn’t need help, Hera is convinced that she does need help, pushing Sabina to offer her help once she’s recovered.
Back on Siathos, Morgan Elsbeth arrives to investigate what Balan and Shin have discovered. By unlocking the star map, Morgan can find out the location where Grand Admiral Thrawn was exiled. Balan refers to it as “The Path to Peridea”, though Morgan points out that only some people call it that. Bayaln goes on to explain that it was the children at the Jedi Temple who named it “The Path to Peridea”, taking the name from old tales and stories. Morgan claims that Thrawn is calling her through time and space, calling her back. Star Wars Rebels, which established that Thrawn and Ezra Bridger are in the World Between Worlds. Shin seems unsure of what will happen once they find Thrawn, but Balan assures her that once he is discovered, they will be empowered like never before. As established in Episode 1, her teacher-student dynamic was set up as a backdrop for Ahsoka and Sabina, so perhaps this will plant the seeds of doubt in Sheen.
On Corellia, Ahsoka and Hera arrive to investigate Morgan’s facilities, and it’s no surprise that they are faced with bureaucratic turmoil and questionable policies from former Imperial supporters. Ahsoka far from what Andor sought to do so with a lush exploration of the political intrigues of the galaxy, but it proved to be a compelling aspect of the episode. While the Mandovers series will likely never live up to the prestige Andorand his sharp criticism and exploration of the galaxy, at least Ahsoka acknowledges the turmoil in the post-imperial era.
Ahsoka Episode 2 sheds more light on Ahsoka and Sabina’s strained relationship
As they travel to Morgan’s abandoned facility, Hera struggles to convince Ahsoka to take Sabina back as an apprentice, though Ahsoka appears to be hesitant to go down that path again. It’s not yet clear if Ahsoka’s resumption of training with Sabina is rooted in a fear of repeating old injury cycles or a genuine doubt about Sabina’s skills. Sabina, however, made her own decision regarding what happened between her and her former master. During a conversation with Huyan, Sabina reveals that Ahsoka was the one who gave up training for seemingly no reason, leaving Sabina with quite a bit of a problem on her shoulder. Huyan tries to reassure her that Ahsoka really wanted and needed her help with the star map, but Sabina is utterly convinced that the only reason she knew about Ezra’s search was Hera. Huyan excels at playing the devil’s advocate—or, as he boasts, acting “logically”—reminding Sabina that she never showed she wanted to return to training. He also uses a bit of tough love by telling her that she’s not a very good student and not as experienced as Ezra, but he wraps it up with a reminder that basically the only way to get better is to really try.
Again, Ahsoka overlooks what could be a really exciting lightsaber fight for Ahsoka by setting her up to fight Inquisitor Marrok (Paul Darnell) against an almost white horizon, matching the color of her lightsaber blades. Marrok is a rather mysterious character in his own right, as his helmet and lack of dialogue obscure his true identity. This character is sure to spawn a dozen well-articulated theories, although it’s not yet clear if Filoni intends to go down a predictable path with the character. While his duel with Ahsoka isn’t as exciting as it could be due to the color choice, at least Hera’s quirky footwork in the sky (which ensures they can track Shin’s ship) makes up for it. Her superb piloting is made even more enjoyable by the much-loved killer droid Chopper, who creates a bit of chaos along the way.
Back on Lothal, Sabina retrieves her Mandalorian armor from storage and contemplates the decision to cut off her hair and return to who she once was. Unlike the Mandalorians, who The Mandalorian Having met with random fans, her clan is not like Din’s or Bo-Katan’s. However, her two-tone hair won’t fit into a helmet unless she cuts off a decent amount of it. Ahsoka seems to have expected this turn of events as she boards her ship and relays Sabina’s message to her. In the end, Hera was right - they both needed each other, even if their history is still shrouded in the mystery of what went wrong. Before embarking with Ahsoka on a new mission to track Shin’s ship to Sitos, Sabina visits a mural depicting The Ghost team study Ezra for a long time. For lovers rebelsthis moment will be special and steeped in a story that only they know, but for casual fans, the show has yet to fully explain why viewers should care about Ezra.
Aboard the Eye of Zion, Morgan reveals that they are nearly finished equipping the starship with new hyperdrives that can take them to Thrawn’s location. Their victory is undermined by the realization that Ahsoka is determined to hunt them down, a fact that Balan seems to worry about. Shin is convinced they got away cleanly, but Bailan senses that Ahsoka is on their trail. The final moments of the episode are carefully crafted to make you want to jump into the next episode, but fans will have to wait another week to see what happens when Ahsoka and Sabina hunt down their opponents in the Force.
Although the premiere deviated a little from reality, the second series is the epitome of the “here the fun begins” meme. A lot of that is due to Green, whose direction consistently elevates what’s shown on the pages, but it’s also to Winstead, who, along with Bordizzo, is more present in the episode. Both actresses are bright beacons of the series, and it is their performance that will attract newcomers. star Wars rebels.
First two series Ahsoka currently streaming on Disney+.
