Avatar: The Last Airbender is the coming-of-age story of Aang, a 12-year-old boy who holds the key to saving the world. Along the way, Aang meets his friends Katara, Sokka, and others, who free the Water Tribe and the Earth Kingdoms from Fire Nation rule. The popular Nickelodeon series has already been shown live once before, but that won’t stop Netflix from giving it another try.
A Netflix adaptation has been in development since 2018, and now, five years later, work is picking up pace. We finally have more information on the upcoming project and what to expect from the series. Here’s everything we know about Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender.

What is Avatar: The Last Airbender about?
In the world Avatar: The Last AirbenderPeople are born into one of four nations: the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdoms, the Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation. Depending on which nation you are part of, you may have the ability to be a “bender” - a person who can literally bend the elements of your nation to his will. Only the Avatar can master all four elements, as he serves as a bridge between humans and the spirit world.
After the Fire Nation goes to war with the rest of the world, Aang, the current Avatar, must travel across the globe trying to master all four elements before it’s too late. Aang must find new allies like Sokka and Katara while also evading enemies like Prince Zuko.
Netflix doesn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken. The main plot of the series will follow Aang’s journey to becoming a fully realized Avatar, as well as give them more room to develop secondary cast and subplots that may have been dropped in the original, using the extra runtime to their advantage. The animated series is a standard half-hour program, and while loved by many, longer episodes could have helped - for example, Aang and Katara learn waterbending at a very fast pace. Here, each episode will likely be 40 minutes to an hour long, giving the characters more time to develop.
Does Avatar: The Last Airbender have a release date?
At the moment, we don’t have any information about the release date of the Netflix series. Avatar. What we do know, however, is that production began in November 2021, with the series set to air sometime in 2024. The executive producer cited the visuals as one of the reasons the series has dragged on for so long. He said “I’m looking forward to this time [when the show is out]but before that happens, there are a lot of visuals to finish.”
Is there a trailer for Avatar: The Last Airbender?
There is currently no official trailer for the series, but during Netflix’s TUDUM event in 2023, we received the title card and year of release of the series. Avatar: The Last Airbender. The 30-second clip shows the logos of the four countries and reminds us that the series is coming to Netflix next year.
Are the original creators involved?
When the series was first announced in 2018, Michael Dante DiMartino And Brian Konietzkocreators Avatar: The Last Airbender were producers and showrunners of the Netflix adaptation. The two had little to no involvement in the 2010 film adaptation, so fans were excited to finally get some full-on live action. Avatar series under the direction of the original creators.
At the time of the announcement Melissa CobbVP of Kids Entertainment at Netflix, said: “We are committed to honoring Brian and Mike’s vision for this retelling and are thrilled to support them in creating a series of live performances bringing Aang’s epic elemental world to life for a global audience. on Netflix.”
Things don’t always go according to plan, and in 2020 Mike and Brian left the project, leaving the series in limbo until Netflix found a new showrunner.
When Michael Dante DiMartino spoke about their departure, he said:
“When Brian and I signed on to the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners. In the joint announcement of the series, Netflix stated that it intends to bring our vision of this retelling to life and support us in the creation of the series. And we expressed how happy we are to be at the helm. Unfortunately, things didn’t go the way we hoped.”
DiMartino added:
“I realized that I can’t control the creative direction of the series, but I can control my reactions. So I decided to leave the project. It was the most difficult professional decision I have ever had to make, and certainly not one I took lightly, but it was essential to my happiness and creative integrity.”
In a separate statement, Brian Konietzko said:
“While I got to work with some great people, both from Netflix and our small development team, the overall management of the project created what I felt was a negative and unsupportive environment.
To be clear, it wasn’t just that we didn’t get our way. Mike and I know how to work together; we didn’t need all the ideas to come from us. As long as we felt that these ideas were in keeping with the spirit and integrity Avatarwe would gladly accept them. However, we ultimately came to the conclusion that we would not be able to meaningfully direct the direction of the series.”
Luckily, fans will still see themselves participating in Avatar Studios, a newly formed Nickelodeon affiliate dedicated to bringing us even more animated adventures in the Avatar universe.
Who is the new creative team?
Exactly one year later, Netflix announced a new showrunner Avatar: The Last Airbender reload. Albert Kim (sleepy hollow) currently serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer for the series. Kim will be joined by executive producers. Dan Lin (Lego Movie) And Lindsey Liberatore (Walker), Rosanna Liang (Butter factory), And Michael Goy (American Horror Story).
Kim posted a letter to fans after his involvement was revealed and said:
“The Netflix format meant we had the opportunity to reimagine a story that was originally told in separate half-hour episodes as a continuous serialized narrative. This meant that the plot points and emotional lines that we loved in the original could be given even more room to breathe and grow.”
Kim also wants to reassure fans that they won’t make pointless changes to the characters and stick to the source material. He went on to say, “I also knew what I didn’t want to do. I didn’t want to change for the sake of change. I didn’t want to modernize the story or distort it in line with current trends. Aang is not going to be a tough anti-hero. Katara is not going to make bangs under the curtain.
The new team behind the project is going to not just copy and paste the animated series into live action, but instead expand on everything that was created in the original series. Kim added:
“Do not misunderstand me. We will expand and develop the world, and we will have surprises for both existing fans and newcomers to this story. But throughout this process, our motto has been “authenticity.” To history. To the characters. to cultural influences. Authenticity is what keeps us moving forward, both in front of and behind the camera, which is why we’ve assembled a team unlike any other - a group of talented and passionate artists who work around the clock to bring this rich and incredible beautiful world into life.”

The music for the series was to be written by composer Jemery Zuckerman, who composed the scores for both films. Avatar: The Last Airbender And The Legend of Korrabut he retired after Michael Dante DiMartino and Brian Konietzko. left the project. Now the series will have music Takeshi Furukawa (Knight Edge Media first broke the news in February). Furukawa took to Twitter to express his excitement about working on the series:

Netflix, along with a new creative team, has announced the film’s main cast. Avatar: The Last Airbender. So far, only a handful of characters have been officially announced, with more to come as we get closer to production.
Gordon Cormier (Rack) will headline the series as Avatar Aang. A cheerful 12-year-old boy with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Aang’s pain and guilt are immeasurable, he is the last airbender and the world’s only home of freedom. Cormier will have to show both the childish nature and the incredible spirit and heart of Aang.
Next to Cormier will be Chiaventio (Ann with E) as Qatar. Hailing from the Southern Water Tribe, Katara is a strong and compassionate waterbender and absolutely believes in Team Avatar’s ability to bring peace to the world.
Further Jan Owsley (13 reasons why), who will play Sokka, Katara’s older brother. At 16, Sokka serves as the protector of his tribe and will do whatever it takes to keep his sister safe. Even if for this he has to travel around the world. Sokka is witty, quick-witted and the only inflexible character in the main cast, which gives you a charming underdog air.
We also have Dallas Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) completes our cast for the role of Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation. Zuko is saddled with the task of capturing the Avatar for his father, the Firelord. Acting as the main opponent for our heroes, Liu will have to bring a certain level of nuance to his game, because Zuko is a villain who follows the hero line, depending on the specific situation.
