Michael Keaton is a world-famous, award-winning actor who has wowed audiences for decades. For longtime fans and movie buffs, Keaton is best known for his genre-defining role as The Dark Knight, also known as Batman/Bruce Wayne, from Tim Burtonclassic, 1989 cult film, Batman. What is the series “Work Gestures” about?
Working stiffness follows working-class brothers Ernie (Belushi) and Mike (Keaton) O’Rourke. The two have recently hired cleaners working in an office building owned by their uncle Harry. Both are morons, but they aspire to climb the corporate ladder. Their life is by no means extravagant. They live in a closet above a cafe owned by their friend Mitch Hannigan (Allan Arbus). The brothers are best friends of cafe waitress NikkiLorna Patterson), Ernie’s longtime love. While they hope to get a promotion and a raise, they get involved in various shenanigans and compete with their stingy boss, Mr. Falzone (Phil Rubenstein).
The pilot of the series was directed by the late great Penny Marshall in one of her first credited directorial roles. In the fall of 1979, only four episodes aired on CBS. The show was unable to surpass the more mainstream TV hits it competed with at the time, such as CHIPS on NBC and Roepers on ABC. Only nine episodes were produced in total before CBS canceled the series. However, due to the popularity of his notable starring roles in later years, some of the unreleased episodes made their way to home video and cable networks such as A&E, Comedy Central, and TV Land.
Working stiffness was a fairly simple sitcom with more emphasis on slapstick and physical humor. Although the show was not a success, Belushi and Keaton shared a solid on-screen comedic chemistry. Their talent and charisma were evident, and it is not surprising that both actors will have long and fruitful careers in the coming years. What is clear from the pilot Working stiffness is that Belushi and Keaton had all the makings of a great comedy duo. Ernie from Belushi was more of a straight man and the self-appointed brains of the group, although he is not as smart as he pretends to be. Keaton’s Mike is more of a funny man and takes on more mistakes as part of the duo. In the opening scene of the pilot episode, Mike fails to move the file cabinet to the new office as Ernie carries it on his back like a backpack. The scene ends with the business executive handing the tablet into Mike’s hands, tossing it back over the wooden table.
The physical gags continue during the pilot episode when Ernie and Mike climb an impossibly high ledge in a building to fix a broken bulb in a clock built into the front of the building. In a scene that definitely resembles Harold LloydX Safety comes last!, Mike tries to fix a light bulb, but his life hangs drastically on the hand of a large clock. Keaton was not only a gifted charismatic comedian, but also a gifted comedian, which he perfectly demonstrates in this role. For his part, Belushi also plays well alongside Keaton in the clock scene, and they play incredibly well with each other.
Although the series did not last very long, there were hints of a sentimental side. A later episode that aired on CBS before the show’s cancellation depicts a very pregnant Nikki about to give birth after being dumped by her boyfriend. Ernie tries to propose to Nikki, but Nikki gently lets him down as it’s not the right time for her to start dating or thinking about marriage again. The brothers then have to struggle to help Nikki deliver the baby as they are left without an ambulance for the night at a coffee shop. After Nikki goes into labor, Mike is so flustered that he actually starts a payphone war by trying to call an ambulance. In these scenes, Keaton displays a humorous, manic-comedy energy. This is the same type of manic energy that he will showcase in his roles in the coming years. The empathy and care that Ernie and Mike showed to their friend Nikki in this episode proved that although they are a couple of goofs, they watch over their friends and they came to Nikki’s aid when they needed it most. Ernie and Mike both had an endearing side to their characters to go along with the physical gags and laughs.

Keaton’s success as Beetlejuice and relationship with Burton paid off as he eventually landed the coveted role of Bruce Wayne aka Batman in Burton’s 1989 film, which became a box office success and a breakthrough in the superhero comics genre. Interestingly, Keaton’s casting was controversial at the time. Many fans were skeptical that Keaton would be able to handle the role due to his comedic background, and there was backlash from fans due to his unconventional appearance, which fans did not see fit for how Batman or Bruce Wayne should look. Of course, Keaton and Burton soon dashed those expectations when Batman was released in theaters.
Return of the Dark Knight and the Phantom himself
Keaton recently made his long-awaited return as Batman/Bruce Wayne at DC and Warner Bros. discovery. Flash. Flash was not a significant success at the box office or critically, but Keaton’s return as Batman is undoubtedly one of the film’s highlights. Even though he wears a restrictive black rubber suit as Batman, his uniquely-fitting charisma still shines through and he grabs attention in every scene he appears in.
Batman isn’t the only iconic Burton film role played by Keaton. The long-awaited sequel recently began production in May. beetle juice. Keaton stars in the film in his iconic role as Beetlejuice “The Ghost with the Most” along with other returning cast members. Winona Ryder And Katherine O’Hara like Lydia and Delia Dietz.
