Paramount was careful to announce its plans for the future of the Transformers franchise prior to the release of Transformers. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and for good reason. The series was still learning to walk again, after Michael Bay era ended at an inauspicious moment, and the title of the 2018 spin-off bumblebee brought barely tolerable box office worldwide. Moreover, Rise of the Beasts was not exactly a sure bet. Within a month of the film’s debut in theaters around the world, it was clear that the film wasn’t quite as good as the studio had hoped it would be.

Fifth weekend after release Rise of the Beasts grossed $5 million at the domestic box office and another $7.6 million at the overseas box office as it passed what appeared to be its last major milestone at the worldwide box office. To date Rise of the Beasts is a member of the $400 million club. After a so-so debut in June, the film earned $146 million in the US and $261 million in international markets for a total worldwide revenue of $407 million. What, as they say, Rise of the Beasts remains the most profitable part of the franchise and still lags behind bumblebeea $465 million global trophy that is starting to feel out of reach at this point.

But unlike that film, which received the best reviews of the series, Rise of the Beasts cost a penny and was met with indifference. While Paramount wisely kept bumblebeeThe film’s budget is a very modest $102 million, following the alarmingly low box office of Bay’s last film of a lifetime. Transformers: The Last Knightthe studio went broke Rise of the Beasts, which was reportedly worth nearly $200 million prior to sale. As a general rule of thumb, films of this size must double their production budget to break even. Rise of the Beasts looks like it will end up in clarity.

But is this the result that Paramount would like for a film that should spawn a new trilogy and maybe even a crossover spin-off? Probably no. Rise of the BeastsThe biggest overseas market remains China, where it has raised almost $90 million at a time when foreign films are not welcomed with open arms. The film also performed very well in Mexico ($19 million) and Peru ($13 million), but most importantly it underperformed in key European markets such as the UK ($9.7 million), France (9.3 million dollars) and Germany (4.7 million dollars).

For comparison, the first transformers the film ended its worldwide run with $708 million in 2007, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossed $836 million in 2009, and disappointing The last knight grossed $602 million in 2017. The series’ two highest-grossing films have grossed over $1 billion worldwide - Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($1.12 billion) and soft reset Transformers: Age of Extinction ($1.1 billion).
