The work of the production designer is wild. On one mission, they could sort out completely ordinary props and scenery, and on the other, decide what the intergalactic prison would look like. This is the type of transition that Ramsey Avery had to do: production designer came up with concepts for both popular Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power And Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2as well as an upcoming Marvel title Captain America 4 (Captain America: New World Order).
In a Q&A with Collider, Avery explained to our editor in chief Steve Weintraub that although Middle-earth and the MCU seem far apart, the approach to them has some surprising similarities. During an interview, Avery revealed that because both projects are based on material that has been scrutinized since their release, the production designer has to rely on more than just previous movies or TV shows to come up with the perfect look:
“A lot like the backstory of Tolkien, the backstory of the MCU. Now, not only in the films themselves, but there are still parts and fragments that they choose from the publication to add to it all. […] But there is definitely a feeling that you are very knowledgeable about all this and are looking for places that can be associated with it.
Avery unveils an exciting new approach to Captain America 4
Weintraub also took the opportunity to get some information from Captain America 4, which is considered one of the most anticipated future Marvel releases. Avery revealed that the Cap franchise is retaining its more down-to-earth and realistic approach (within the MCU, of course), but he’s also excited because “Marvel is trying something new right now.” Avery acknowledged that yes, this is a Marvel story, but the production team is trying to approach it “very far-sighted”.
“[T]The purpose of this is to be very down to earth, to make sure that this is really the case in the world. So in many ways it’s a different meaning than some of the later pieces. And it’s a very conscious choice, and it’s an exciting choice and an exciting choice. And it comes down to a whole range of different issues.”
Avery said he was very happy Captain America 4and partly because he was trying to work on a project with a director Julius Ona (The Cloverfield Paradox) for a decade. The production designer stated that Onah’s vision is exciting and that he doesn’t have a “normal view of Marvel”, which opens the door for interesting new stories and interactions.
Captain America: New World Order - which is likely to have a title change - is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 3, 2024.
