At the series finale successionWaystar Royco’s board is assembled, a revised proposal from GoJo is on the table, and the co-CEOs are about to make a proposal as to whether they should take it. Jeremy StrongKendall states that this is a bad deal. But his sister swings at the last second. She changed her mind. Because she doesn’t think he’ll be good at it. Kendall melts, attacks RomanKieran Culkin), screaming, tried to throw another voice - and it doesn’t work. He is lost. He wanders around the city and falls on a bench with his father’s bodyguard chasing him… and it’s over.
Ultimately it was Matthew MacfadyenTom Wambsgans, who outsmarted him with a deft corporate ego massage to Alexander SkarsgardLukas Matsson, the new owner of WaystarRoyco, who in turn crowned him the new CEO of the company and the winner of the great battle for the vacant throne of Logan Roy.
Strong spoke extensively with Vanity Fair after the finale and talked about the pain Kendall felt when he was so close to winning and how he was taken away from him by his sister, whom he trusted (foolishly) to do what he thought was right. . But Shiv (Sara Snook) was right, Kendall was never the right person for the job. And no matter how much he denied it, everyone else knew about it.
Icarus Roy
Though Shiv is torn between her brother and her own twisted moral compass, in her last moments as she witnesses the bestial nature of Kendall’s primal rage as he throws himself into a childlike tantrum, there is almost a slight sense of self-satisfied victory in her eyes - she knows what she’s done. it, she controlled the outcome and took what her brother wanted more than anything. In Strong’s words, “It’s primal. There is almost malevolence in her eyes, because she has this power over him. He explains that even when he thought he had all the cards, Kendall’s siblings had more power than he ever had. He said:
“It’s devastating. He flew very close to the sun, and he almost got to it. And then the fall is complete. And Shiv - remember About mice and people where he loves these animals but he also has to hurt them? He breaks what he loves. That scene in the glass room after the vote was unbearable for the actor. Because it’s right here. And then [Shiv and Roman] has the right to commit suicide with a sentence.”
