The Flash didn’t let his city down

WITH Flash this is the latest series in the Arrowverse, focusing on the fastest human alive. This is appropriate because Grant GustinBarry Allen, aka The Flash, is made from Arrow in a two-part Christmas episode of the second season. It was originally going to be a backdoor pilot for the series. Flash got a traditional pilot. Amell explains that the grandiose scope of Barry’s origin will take more time to develop. The goal at the end of the day was for Flash to allow the universe to expand into the Justice League. As Amell put it, “And that’s exactly what they did. They have done it. I mean, I think DC gets a lot of crap for not building this interconnected universe. I just think people should watch what they’ve done on TV.”

Amell also had nothing but praise for Gustin, who said, “I know I was expansive, but when he came on set, he just had such energy. I remember that very first time that Oliver and Barry interacted, I think working with Grant, I found something in the character that I hadn’t found before.” The DC star pointed out that his gruff character was a man of few words, especially when compared to The Flash’s dialogue and heavy science background. This made Gustin’s job a unique challenge: the actor even changed Amell’s approach to Oliver, stating:

“When I come back and watch the first season Arrow in particular, it’s a very difficult hour for me because they really wanted Oliver to be so distant, PTSD, lonely, and it’s not until later seasons that I feel like I’ve fully realized what I’m capable of. with character. While it seems to me that Grant appeared just fully formed, which is very impressive.”

Amell also talked about the first time he shot at Flash which was the previously mentioned pilot episode. The scene where Oliver gives Barry his iconic superhero identity became one of his favorite scenes he shot with Gustin. Another favorite scene of his was the bar scene from the Elseworlds crossover, which was then paid tribute to in Oliver’s last Arrowverse appearance in this final season of Arrowverse. Flash. Amell recalled:

“I told him [Eric Wallace, the showrunner of Flash] that my favorite scene we’ve ever filmed in a crossover, besides my favorite scene in the pilot, was when Barry and Oliver were drinking at the bar. And he wrote this beautiful scene where the two of us are sitting and drinking beer. [for Oliver’s return in season 9]. If you go back and listen carefully to the dialogue, you will see that this is almost verbatim what I said to him in the pilot episode. Flash. It was a really cool full circle moment.”

The previously mentioned Elseworlds crossover was also the first time the Flash and Green Arrow interacted with Tyler HoechlinSuperman and Ruby RoseBatwoman. “I remember this from my first appearance on Flash. I remember Oliver and Barry interacting with Superman and Supergirl for the first time,” Amell said, and continued, “I mean, come on. It makes me feel like a child, a dream come true. And then Grant and Melissa [Benoist]and I’m going to Chicago to shoot scenes for Ruby Rose’s introduction as Batwoman, it was a pretty unique script.” When asked how he felt knowing that the Flash was the finish line of the Arrow universe, Amell simply replied, “Great.” He went on to say, “I’m glad we could be a small part of it. Maybe they should have changed the name since I was done.

The bittersweet end of the Arrowverse

Even though fans have long known about the fate of the Arrowverse, it’s still hard to believe that this amazing era for DC is coming to an end. Arrow changed the television landscape from Flash maximize the potential of the superhero genre on the small screen. While there were many keys to the success of this universe, Amell and Gustin were at the heart of it. Their chemistry and sheer love for each other propelled the Arrow Universe through fire and water. No matter the quality of the episode, crossover, or season, you can always count on this pair of heroes to save the day with great success. Many fans have grown up with this vast universe and shows like Flash were their gateway to the comic book medium. This is something that many shared universes cannot say.
