Many fairy tales have been around for over 100 years, and their tales of magic and morality continue to fill movie screens for almost as long. Walt Disney has always been a major fairy tale film industry as they have created animated films for many popular fairy tales.
While Disney is the leader of cinema, they don’t deserve all the credit. Many fairy tales were filmed by other studios. Most often read as children, these stories have been adapted for the screen countless times, likely due to their important messages usually associated with the genre. Although some devices are naturally better than others.
10 ‘Bluebeard’ (1697)
Blue Beard maybe a fairy tale you haven’t heard of before. This is probably because Disney didn’t do it and most of the films made about it are in French. However, eleven more films have been made about it. There is even a full-length opera. So why didn’t Disney touch this fairy tale? Probably because it’s so dark.
A creepy story about a young woman who marries a reclusive lord named Bluebeard, who, as his name suggests, has a blue beard. While at his castle, a woman discovers that her husband is a serial killer who has killed his previous wives. To be honest, this title would probably fit very well as a horror movie, but filmmakers haven’t gotten their hands on it for a long time, despite the interesting premise. Perhaps it’s time for a new revival.
9 “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” (1704)
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves Arabic fairy tale, in which the popular phrase “Open Sesame” appeared. The story is about a man named Ali Baba who discovers a hidden den of thieves. Although the film has not seen a full adaptation in Hollywood for decades, it can also be found in many other forms, often intertwined with other stories.
In fact, Disney released a video adaptation of the story, choosing to mix it with their popular films. Aladdin row. The animated musical film is called Aladdin and the king of thieves (1996). This story can also be found in feature films such as the 1952 film. Ali Baba’s son. It can also be found in numerous films in foreign languages. The uniqueness of this story is that it is not about princesses, which makes it different from many other fairy tales.
8 ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (1697)

It was made into a classic Disney movie, although there have been several other adaptations. Interestingly, the live-action Disney version of this movie is titled Maleficent (2014) showed the story from the villain’s point of view and added a modern touch to the classic story.
7 “Jack and the Beanstalk” (1890)
Jack and the beanstalk This is the story of a poor boy named Jack who purchased magic beans. He plants them in his garden and grows a huge beanstalk that grows taller than anything on earth. Climbing it, Jack discovers a kingdom hidden in the clouds, ruled by giants.
The story has had dozens of adaptations, many of them animated, but there have also been several live action games. The last one is from 2013. Jack the Giant Killer, which expands the story and makes it more epic fantasy. Its fantastical elements make it so popular and one of the most recurring tales in both film and animation.
6 ‘Hansel and Gretel’ (1812)
Hansel and Gretel This is the story of two German children who go for a walk in the woods and are captured by a witch who intends to bake and eat them. Fortunately, children are much smarter than the witch and can easily outsmart her, defeat her and save her own skin.
It’s a rather harmless tale of childlike innocence and how often it’s better to use your wits than use violence. There is also a moral that you should never enter the forest alone. Despite the childish themes, it has been adapted for horror several times, most recently in 2020. Surprisingly, the horror concept works pretty well.
5 “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1812)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was one of the first animated princess musicals ever made by Disney, it came out way back in 1937. The story is familiar to many: a beautiful princess named Snow White becomes the target of a jealous witch after the witch’s mirror informs her that Snow White is the most beautiful woman in the country and not a witch. While Snow White befriends the seven dwarfs, the witch plots to kill Snow White, which she eventually does. However, Snow White comes back to life when she is kissed by the Prince.
This tale is like Hansel and Gretel has been adapted into many different genres, including an epic fantasy film. Snow White and the hunters (2012), which received satisfactory reviews from critics. The film’s adaptations range from innocent and child-friendly to violent and mature, making it accessible to people of all ages. The Disney version of this film will also appear in the future.
4 ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (1740)
The beauty and the Beast this is a French folk tale that, despite its age, has a very heartfelt and true message. The story concerns a young woman named Belle who is forced to stay in the castle of a reclusive prince. She discovers that the prince is a monster due to a curse placed on him. Despite his grotesque appearance, Belle falls in love with him, allowing the prince to return to his human form.
The point is that looks don’t always matter in love, it’s what’s on the inside that matters. It’s a really beautiful moral that many people adore, which is why there have been so many adaptations, and why it’s still so popular.
3 ‘The Little Mermaid’ (1836)
Mermaid so timeless because of its messages of true love and self-sacrifice. The tale is about a young mermaid named Ariel who wants nothing more than to be human. She saves the prince from a shipwreck and falls in love with him. Unfortunately, Ariel is at sea and the prince lives on land, making their love impossible. So, Ariel goes to the witch Ursula, who turns Ariel into a human in exchange for Ariel’s heavenly singing voice.
The hype for the Disney movie has barely died down since its release, and it’s set to be remade in a live-action release later in May 2023. Of course, Disney films are not the only adaptations, and there are many other (mostly foreign) retellings.
2 ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ (1697)
Little Red Riding Hood it is such a popular fairy tale among children because of its cautionary tale. The story of a young girl who goes to visit her sick grandmother, she is warned not to go astray. She does it anyway and meets a wolf to whom she tells about her grandmother. The wolf quickly makes it to Granny’s house ahead of time, hoping to lure Little Red Riding Hood there to eat her and her grandmother.
The moral, of course, is not to deviate from the established path, especially in the forest, and be wary of strangers. The tale has naturally been adapted several times, but what makes it different is that there are many unique adaptations. Some have even been horror films that offer a new take on history. Despite multiple incarnations, the message is still relevant to all audiences, which is what makes it so popular.

Cinderella was one of the original Disney princess movies that kids continue to watch and recognize to this day. It has been redone countless times. Disney still uses the character today as a popular mascot and as the face of their princess film heritage. Why? It’s simple: this is a story from rags to riches. Filmophiles love stories about underprivileged and undervalued people rising up to be better than their powerful peers and really showing them how wrong they were.
This is a common trope that can be found in countless films, whether or not they are related to Cinderella or not. In fact, this is the most remade story in the history of cinema. Exactly because of this reason Cinderella it is the number one most recognizable and beloved fairy tale, both in print and in film.
