Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for Season 4 of Legacies. Despite the genre of black comedy and political plot, succession this show is about family. It’s a dysfunctional film full of narcissists and traitors, but the family is at the core of the series nonetheless. Roy’s children constantly lived in the shadow of their father Logan (Brian Cox), until his sudden death at the start of Season 4. Throughout the series, many questions have been raised regarding his upbringing, and now that he has fallen out of the limelight, it is clear that he had a lasting impact on one of his children in particular. .
Through successionOver the course of four seasons, many parallels emerged between Logan and Roy’s children. In the latest episode of America Decides, the similarities between Logan and Jeremy StrongKendall couldn’t be more obvious. When calling ex-wife Rava (Natalie Gold), Kendall asks her to console his frightened daughter Sophie (Swayam Bhatia), ironically, it was Kendall’s bad upbringing that scared her in the first place. It’s at this point that the parallels between Kendall’s and Logan’s upbringing come into full play.
Kendall takes no responsibility for her actions
In order to protect her daughter after being pushed outside for having an affair with Kendall, Kendall sends a car to follow her and Rava without them knowing. As the car follows them menacingly, mother and daughter go crazy, causing Kendall to confess that he sent the car to look after them, emphasizing how distant he is from a parent.
Completely unaware of her insane actions, Kendall is in complete denial about the absurdity of the situation. Instead of looking after his daughter himself, he uses one of his minions to do the dirty work so he can focus on his Waystar business. This is a sign that he is an absentee parent, a trait that was prominent in the previous episode “Back Door Party”. In the episode, Rava mentions to Kendall that Sophie ran into the street, to which he replies, “Where have you been?” Understandably, this immediately leads to conflict between the two characters, with Kendall unable to grasp the fact that Rava was not with her at the time, blaming her for the absence. The scene showcases Kendall’s narcissism as he looks for someone to blame other than himself. It is his job that gives Sophie problems, but he refuses to take any responsibility, instead blaming Rava and sending a car to look after them.
Through successionWe’ve heard countless comments from Roy’s kids, who clearly suffered from the same kind of detached form of parenting in their youth, and Logan was constantly focused on his position as CEO at Waystar Royco. Now that Kendall is becoming more and more like his father in season four with every episode, Logan’s aloof parenting style has shifted to him.
Logan and Kendall lie to themselves
Trying to comfort her worried daughter, Kendall says, “I love her and that’s why I do everything I do.” It’s a feeling that Kendall clearly uses to explain his absence from Sophie’s life, suggesting that he spends so much time working to keep her happy. Once again, this draws a strong parallel with Logan, with the showrunner. Jesse Armstrong using a line to mirror dialogue previously spoken by Logan in the first season. Logan says, “Everything I’ve done in my life, I’ve done for my kids.” The similarity between the two lines speaks of a bad upbringing that is passed down from generation to generation.
These two dialogue fragments tell us a lot about the unloved father and son, as they lie not only to their partners and children, but also to themselves. Kendall sincerely believes that he is a good father, like his father before him. His nervous breakdown after losing presents from his kids in Season 3’s “Too Many Birthdays” shows how he does I want to be a good father. Having gifts from his children would reflect this, but of course Kendall spends most of the episode horny, which is a great example of his upbringing. Kendall’s focus on being the CEO of Waystar and the constant need to impress and fit in with his father has plagued him, leaving him too busy to be a good parent to his children.
In the season four premiere episode “Munstera”, Logan acted exactly the same. After stabbing Roy’s children in the back at the height of Season 3, the grizzled father is upset that none of them showed up for his birthday. This is an example of how Logan wants to be seen as a good father despite constantly putting his global empire before them. In the season 3 finale, Logan was too selfish to take care of his children, focusing on making a deal with the Gojo company with little regard for how it would affect his children and their position in the company. After all, Kendall and Logan are too focused on work to be good parents.
Will Kendall ever be a good father?
As mentioned earlier, Kendall is constantly busy with his work, which prevents him from being a real father. At the start of season 3, he took over Rava and Sophie’s house as temporary headquarters when he started destroying his father, even dating sibling Shiv (Sara Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) in his daughter’s bedroom. This is an example of Kendall putting her business ahead of her child.
If Kendall can find more time for Sophie (and not just late at night when she is already asleep), Kendall can start justifying himself as a father. He must understand what she needs, and literally be there instead of having Rava do all the physical education for him. The fact that he forced Rava to tell their daughter that he loves her demonstrates that he has not yet realized the importance of doing these things himself. Only if he devotes more time to his children can Kendall become a good parent.
Since the only father in Kendall’s life is the cold-blooded Logan (and his mother is not much better), it becomes clear that his inability to be present as a parent is a consequence of his own childhood. While it’s clear that Kendall really wants to be a good father, he must learn to put his kids ahead of his job if he’s ever going to get there.
