You may have been wondering where LaBeouf is? Well, it looks like he was working on an upcoming movie. And today Gravitas Ventures released a new trailer and poster for Padre Pio an autobiographical film detailing the life of a Roman Catholic saint. Shia LaBeouf plays the saint of the same name in the film. Padre Pio will be released June 2, 2023.
The film tells about the early years of the saint. The film is set at the end of the First World War. The film chronicles both Padre Pio’s journey to a remote Capuchin monastery and the journey of young soldiers returning to San Giovanni Rotondo. In a land of violence, poverty and harsh church rule, a desperate population will rise up against the authorities. Set on the eve of Italy’s first free elections, the film sets the stage for a historic and somewhat apocalyptic event that will change the course of world history.
Striking new trailer
A new trailer released today shows the build-up of tension, the centerpiece of the film, as well as LaBeouf’s masterful performance as Padre Pio. The trailer gives us violent images of post-World War I Italy as society faced personal and societal collapse. Death and disease is overflowing, with images of wounded soldiers and work-weary citizens playing throughout the trailer. This is contrary to the religious imagery of the monastic life of Padre Pio. The first image depicts Jesus on the cross, his injuries reflecting those of Italian citizens overcoming the horrors of war. A poster was also released today showing LaBeouf in Padre Pio’s outfit looking especially religious. In the poster, bathed in golden light, LaBeouf can be seen looking towards the upper left corner of the frame, towards the light.

Padre Pios, director Abel Ferrara and written Maurizio Braucci and Ferrara. Of the film, and of Shia LaBeouf, Ferrara said, “Padre Pio is a film about the spiritual journey of a great saint, paralleling that of Shia LaBeouf who portrays him.”
Cameron Moorethe senior director of distribution at Gravitas Ventures said of the film, “Padre Pio will become a much-discussed religious biopic in an unforeseen future. Shia LaBeouf puts on a stunning performance under the superb direction of acclaimed director Abel Ferrara. We are excited to show the film to audiences across North America.”
Padre Pio will be released June 2, 2023.
