There have already been some exciting reveals at CinemaCon this year, and Sony Pictures is the latest studio to add to the news. During the presentation, the company announced that its upcoming Spiderman spin off Kraven the Hunter will be rated R. While there are other R-rated Marvel properties, Kraven the Hunter will be Sony’s first rated superhero film.
While most of the movie’s plot details are still unknown, we (apparently) already know that it will focus on the main villain played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Prior to the film, Taylor-Johnson made his Marvel debut, appearing in the MCU as Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver. Avengers: Age of Ultron and, in short, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Kraven himself is a formidable villain who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #15 in the 1960s. He is known for having a variety of powers, each of which enhances his physical abilities to superhuman levels.
Along with Taylor-Johnson movie stars West Side StoryX Ariana Debose like the voodoo priestess Calypso, Fred Hechinger as Kraven’s half-brother Dmitry Smerdyakov (aka Chameleon) and Christopher Abbott reportedly playing the main antagonist of The Foreigner. Alessandro Nivola, Levi MillerAnd Russell Crowe will also play in currently unknown roles.
Why Cravenrating matters a lot
As mentioned, only a single digit number of Marvel-related films have been rated R, including Dead Pool movies and Logan, although neither was released through Sony. In recent years, Sony has become known as a center spiderman-central features, especially with Tom Hollandled films, Venom And Venom: Let there be carnageAnd Morbius. However, despite the potential for at least the latter three to move into higher R-rated territory, they have all been rated PG-13. WITH Craven Being the first to receive an R status for Sony, it gives both the film and the company the opportunity to fully explore the topic and however they decide to approach it - be it blood and gore, a flurry of F-bombs and the like. It also gives the film another way to stand out from other upcoming superhero films.
Near Cravena few more to come Spiderman features for fans to keep an eye on. June continued In spider verseauthorized Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will release. A Venom 3 also in development, like a spin-off Madame Web the debut is scheduled for 2024.
