Universal Movie Super Mario Bros. It fared stronger than expected this weekend, topping the national box office with $58 million - the best third weekend ever for an animated film. After three weeks of release, it’s clear that underestimating an animated video game adaptation isn’t the smartest thing to do. Super Mario exceeded expectations on each of its three weekends, en route to an impressive $434 million at the domestic box office and $872 million worldwide.
Also this week ahead of expectations Warner Bros. The Evil Dead Rise. The fifth film in the horror series created by Sam Raimi earned $23 million in its opening weekend, exceeding the $15 million to $20 million range projected days before its release. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Covenant received a solid A CinemaScore from audiences on its opening day, and was also largely well received by critics. But films set during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have a poor track record at the box office, with the exception of american sniper, Certainly. Expect Super Mario top the box office for the fourth consecutive weekend before being replaced by a Disney film. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the first week of May.
