Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for Season 4 of Legacies.season 4 succession It’s been a ride so far, but the last episode featured something out of the ordinary for the series: the bottle episode. “Honeymoon States” is the perfect sequel to “Connor’s Wedding” as it shows the Roy regrouping after losing their patriarch, and is one of the few times in the entire series where the entire family is in the same place - with the obvious exception of Logan (Brian Cox), of course - and that means there’s plenty of intrigue, intrigue, and plot twists, all from the comfort of Roy’s high society Manhattan penthouse.
That’s what a bottle episode is: a whole story that starts and ends on its own, the action takes place in the context of the show and takes place in the same environment. In this episode succession sets a new standard for what a good bottle episode is, as it forces every Roy is not concerned with Logan’s death, but with the future of the family. From Kendall’s newly appointed co-CEOs (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) Marcia (Khiam Abbas), they should all look each other in the eye, pay their respects, and keep playing Roy’s ruthless game, setting the stage for the rest of the season.
Bottle episodes let ‘succession script shine’
There’s a reason the bottle episodes are so popular: they cut down on the scale of the show as much as possible, making room for the text to take center stage as the main element. They generally require the production to use as few actors as possible, along with sets and effects. succession flexes this a bit, bringing together most of the core cast, but none of these rules are set in stone, so creative liberties can be taken as needed.
At first, the idea that Honeymoon States takes place in the same place may seem strange at first, since Roy’s penthouse has many rooms. There are many different encounters going on at the same time, like the kids in the living room and the old guard in the kitchen, but ultimately each character only moves between these places, inevitably bumping into people they don’t want to talk to. This gives us countless incredible moments, and the sheer awkwardness of the whole situation is enough to make anyone want to lock themselves in a bathroom somewhere. But Roy is a proud company, so they handle it all.
In truth, the writing in Honeymoon States is so good that there is at least one moment in every scene that could easily go viral on TikTok. While “Connor’s Wedding” had an impact on how the whole situation was built and implemented, dialogue stands out this week. There are countless examples. Roy’s kids read their father’s obituaries as if they were movie reviews, ConnorAlan Ruck) calls Logan a “paleo-libertarian”, Carl (David Rache) dreams of burning art, Roman (Kieran Culkin) creatively diss Tom(Matthew Macfadyen), Marcia and Willa (Justine Lupe) exchange jabs… succession It was always funny, but this time he really outdid himself.
However, the episode manages to push the season’s narrative forward despite the comedic moments and all the supposedly sad context. This introduces a rapid development into the narrative, as in Shiv (Sara Snook) a newly confirmed pregnancy and a paper with Kendall (Jeremy Strong) — and Greg (Nicholas Brown)? - name on it, and immediately forces the characters to deal with all this almost immediately. Kendall is promoted to CEO alongside Roman and quickly has to make a deal with his siblings to protect his position. Shiv has to deal with being left behind by her brothers and the vulnerability of hiding her pregnancy, which could further undermine her already fragile place in the game. Tom is desperately trying to get attached to whoever wants him.
‘The Heir’ needed a bottle scene after Logan’s death
Three whole seasons later succession finally begins to resolve the issue of succession at Waystar Royco. Logan’s murder couldn’t have been easy for the showrunner Jesse Armstrong and writers, but it was necessary for the show to really start. So far, Roy’s kids have been fighting over their dad’s approval, now they really need to put on their best game to try and come out on top. In that sense, what Honeymoon States is doing is the potential fallout from Logan’s demise, but it also undermines some of viewers’ expectations.
Even though Logan’s death happened in a compact episode, the sheer scale of the event made it seem larger. There are many reasons for this, from the script’s masterfully conveying the chaos that the loss of the patriarch sets up, to the fact that some of us have begun to think that maybe Logan is immortal (don’t deny it, you thought so too). Of course, the sequel could not reach the same scale and be so shocking. Didn’t have to either. It’s always good to keep things as simple as possible after a huge shake-up, and that’s what the writers did in this week’s episode to make it easier for us to process Logan’s death and answer some of the questions everyone had about it. as the location of Marcia and Kerry (Zoe Winters) status.
Interestingly, some viewers thought “Connor’s Wedding” might qualify for the bottle sequence, but it doesn’t fit that definition as it takes place in multiple locations, including Logan’s private jet and Connor’s wedding reception boat. Since all the characters were dealing with the same problem, you would think that they might have a common metaphorical space, but we had more places than that, and ultimately it was really two different places, which made mobile phones are extremely important to this particular story. . The plot had to constantly move from one place to another and, in the end, everyone met at the airport.
Honeymoon States, on the other hand, is almost a textbook definition of what a bottle scene should be, short of a reduced cast. Despite the fact that there are many different rooms, they are all in the same apartment, which means they make the characters interact. The episode has its own story, which is faced with the difficult task of answering the question “what now?” one day Logan died, and he got his way by rearranging every player’s pieces on this business chessboard. Now let’s see if Kendall really has what it takes to deliver the final checkmate.
New episodes succession Season 4 premieres every Sunday on HBO and HBO Max.
