hit show External banks The third season came out on February 23, and it’s full of drama. With SarahMadeleine Kline) between the likable but troubled protagonist John B. (Chase Stokes) and her ex-boyfriend Cook Topper (Austin North), and Rafe Cameron (Drew Starkey) becomes the most unbalanced person in the entire Outer Bank, he can be hard to keep up with. As all of this is happening, the lives of the children are once again being watched by adults, and Big John returns to the scene with the unexpected consequences of a long-awaited reunion. In fact, as they discover over the course of the season, the children and their parents have serious consequences for their adventures.
In truth, at times this script is as melodramatic as its cast is wonderful.
While the show seems to go between hilarious team drama and Uncharted-like the treasure hunt story, there’s one recurring theme: the parents (with the exception of Pope’s mom and dad) are pretty terrible, and the kids are definitely not okay. Although the group brings on many problems, there are several problems that are simply dubious for parents. There are several examples of apparently terrible parenting, such as Big John (Charles Halford) to disappear, leaving their child alone for a year in pursuit of treasure, or JJ (Rudy Pankov) cruel convict father Luke (Gary Wicks), or any of the absent moms (seriously, where is Sarah and Rafe’s mom?), but in terms of possible “misguided” parenting, there’s one egregious example touched on in season 3 that the media should be talking about, and it’s not melodrama at all.
Kitty Hawk and similar places
Kiara (portrayed Madison Bailey), a Cook-born Pog child who prefers to hang out with Pogoland’s best boys, has a group of parents who have fallen into despair. Mike (Marland Burke) and Anna Carrera (Samantha Soul) are fed up with disappearances and Kiara’s rebelliousness, and you certainly can’t blame them. Last season, Pogelandians disappeared for several days without a trace to determine if they were alive at all. They don’t know what to do and make it clear to Kiara by threatening to send her to therapy in the wild as the season progresses. Kiara repeatedly refuses, so they hire two thugs to take her by force to a facility called “Kitty Hawk”. Kitty Hawk, North Carolina is the city in the Outer Banks region of the state where the show takes place. Thus, although Kitty Hawk does not exist as an institution for sending at-risk youth, its inclusion in External banks poses a real challenge, while its name is a clear allusion to the city of OBX.
By making an object like Kitty Hawk a part of this season’s main plot, External banks opened a discussion that has attracted much-needed attention over the past few years. Wildlife therapy is part of a highly profitable business known as the Troubled Teen Industry. The National Youth Rights Association defines the troubled teen industry by “several different names - boot camps, behavior change centers, wilderness therapy, gay conversion - but they’re all sold to parents who feel they need to change their child’s behavior.”
These camps are real, and children can be ambushed and put into these facilities against their will, as was the case with Kiara. Some teenagers’ experiences were even more traumatic as they were “kidnapped” from their homes in the middle of the night to be taken to a behavior modification center. At the same time, the administrators of the institution force teenagers to stop all contact with the outside world in the name of “tough love”. Wilderness camps can cost up to $50,000 for a child’s stay, which is usually not covered by insurance. As a result, families who decide to go to such extreme measures for their child visit these camps frequently, such as refinancing or selling their homes. The Troubled Teen Industry makes billions of dollars in profits a year with little to no regulation. Consultants may have varying degrees of training, but in the absence of rules, some do not.
There have been countless reports of survivors detailing various forms of abuse, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. To make matters worse, survivors usually report that camp facilitators are very careful about communication with the outside world, so it is often impossible to mention the inhumane treatment of families.
‘OBX’ isn’t the first mention of the troubled teen industry in the mainstream media
Believe it or not, the picture that External banks The color of this industry is pink. The problem has been relatively underestimated until Paris Hilton spoke about her experience in a 2020 documentary This is Paris. In the documentary, Hilton describes her time in the troubled teen industry, especially her harrowing experience at Provo Canyon High in Utah. Hilton explained cases of abuse and abuse of power by the school administration. Since Hilton issued the statement, thousands of people have spoken out about the inhumane treatment of the troubled teen industry on the news and social media.
The most frightening thing about this business is that he seems to be using outright deceit to sell his services to parents who feel hopeless. Kathy Hilton later spoke about her decision to send Paris Hilton to Provo Canyon and called it an attempt to help her child. Considering the amount of money that is often required to send children to these programs, it is clear that parents are making this decision with the best of intentions, hoping to keep their children off the wrong path.
IN external banks, JJ is able to save Kiara from the facility by tricking the administrator into believing her cat (which doesn’t exist). died. It’s a funny moment when the cunning JJ does what he seems to have a knack for: helping his friends by any means necessary. To keep up the atmosphere of the show, Kiara’s time in the troubled teen industry only lasts one day and thankfully doesn’t hurt too much. However, at the same time External banks shed critical light on a topic that needs more attention in a way that nuanced and wove well into its storyline, and that, no matter how dramatic other areas of the script are, is how you make influential television.
All three seasons External banks currently available for streaming on Netflix.
