After killing the “love” of his life and faking his own death in the third season, Joe Goldberg went through many changes in London to start a new life. First part of the fourth season You sees Joe being played Penn Badgleymoving on from his past affair with Marianne (Tati Gabriel) and changing his entire identity to university professor Jonathan Moore. However, old habits are hard to break, and the second half of the fourth season completely changes the way we watched the first part. Since Joe kept Marienne imprisoned in the infamous glass box the whole time, Badgley reacted to a particular scene in which his character and Marienne were in the basement by saying that the return of the box was like some sort of “weird homecoming”.

The locker has become synonymous with the series, with the box serving as a cage for rare books in the first season, as well as a cage for its own victims. In season 4, Joe was able to find Marienne after following her to London. Marienne ran away, of course, but Joe quickly cornered her in an abandoned building. After some conversation with a frightened Marienne, Joe wanted to emphasize that he was not a bad guy after all and that he was ready to put his past behind him and let her go. Soon Marienne leaves him - safely. However, in the reaction clip, the actor was watching a specific scene in the second half of the fourth season where Joe kidnaps Marienne by placing her in the now infamous glass box. When the character ironically said that he was trying to make things better, Badgley replied:

“He actually says he’s trying to make it better when he throws her in a cage. I feel like we’ve never seen such a literal moment, right? It’s hard to play Joe. [because] about how nasty he is and all, but once we got the box back, it was a weird homecoming. Now we’ve moved on to what the show does well and knows, and that’s become very relevant again. This is true love-hate with a box. For all of us.”

The first half of Season 4 introduces Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers) as the counterpart to Joe’s murderous urges and the man behind the murders of wealthy people. However, when Part 2 aired on March 9, Rhys turned out to be a real person, yes, but all of his crimes were the product of Joe’s wild and crazy imagination. On Speleers’ portrayal of Rhys, Badgley explained, “I love how Ed Speleers, who plays Rhys, can be kind of the physical embodiment of Joe’s thoughts. This marks a new cycle for me playing Joe and for Joe where it’s like he can interact with himself in a more honest way.”

In the last part of the clip, Joe - the lunatic that he is - crashed into a glass box, and Marienne was in complete shock. Bagley then added, “I think if he had hit his head so hard that he had a concussion and really wanted to succumb to that split personality, I think at least he would have had a small cut on his forehead.” I’m just talking.”

Although the fourth season somehow shows Joe as a changed person, the second part ultimately destroys this idea, emphasizing Joe as the “monster on the hill” that he has been since the beginning of the show. In addition to Gabrielle and Badgley reprising their roles, as well as Speleers as Rhys, the fourth season of “You” also introduces new characters such as Charlotte Ritchie, Tilly the Guardian, Amy Lee HickmanAnd Lucas Gage.
