Citadel has just been renewed for a second season on Prime Video, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is ahead of the series’ April 28 premiere on the streaming network. The action-packed sci-fi series has become a costly undertaking for the streaming service, and the show’s proactive renewal for a second season certainly shows Amazon’s trust in the series.
The series was created by the Russo brothers, who previously worked on projects such as Avengers: Infinity War. Citadel has been in development since 2018 and was originally billed as a “tiered series of international events” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series plan includes a spin-off series in local languages in Spain, Mexico, the Italian Alps and India. Collider has previously reported on the apparently fraught and costly drama behind the making of this rather ambitious project. The first season was originally budgeted at a whopping $160 million, but re-shoots added $75 million to the total. However, this drama has not deterred Amazon from renewing the series, even though the show has yet to premiere.
Citadel stars priyanka chopra And Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden as Citadel agents Mason Kane and Nadia Xin. The series focuses on a defunct independent spy organization called The Citadel and investigates agents who worked for the agency in a past life. The series explores the agents in their new lives as they attempt to resurrect a group from the dead, and a first look at that ambitious premise was revealed in a recent trailer, as we reported earlier.

The series has a lot at stake as it is the second most expensive show ever made, right behind another large-scale Prime Video series. Rings of Power. Collider previously reported on the highly anticipated epic fantasy series and how its ambitious scale has paid off, making Amazon Studios the most watched show ever. However, Prime Video failed to capture widespread pop culture in the way that other epic series such as Dragon House have.
The news of the show’s preventative renewal comes after the show officially debuted at South by Southwest. It has not yet been announced how many episodes will be in the second season. The first season will consist of six episodes. You can watch the trailer for the series below.
