David Bowie gained fame as an eclectic performer far ahead of his time. An established name in the music business, the singer was also not afraid to experiment with different musical styles, solidifying his reputation as an artist known for his groundbreaking work. Although Bowie is best known as a rock musician, he was also active on the big screen, one of his most notable roles being in 1976. Nicholas Roeg- cult classic The Man Who Fell to Earth, which further elevated the late artist’s career to even greater heights. And now “man” will fall in the comfort of our homes with 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and digital release in an exclusive Steelbook available for purchase on April 25th.
The Man Who Fell to Earth has been beautifully restored in 4K and is now available for a suggested retail price of $27.99. The Blu-ray release also contains special features, including some featurettes, a trailer for the film, and interviews with Bowie and Rogue, as well as a costume designer, photographer, producer, writer, and cinematographer. Based Walter Tevis1963 sci-fi novel of the same name, classic of the 70s. marks Bowie’s first starring role in a film, where he plays the humanoid alien Thomas Jerome Newton, who comes to Earth in search of water to return to his remote home planet suffering from severe drought.
The alien’s mission, however, was cut short when he became entangled in human corrupt practices, all the while dealing with the alienation that comes with being an alien. In a film that serves as a commentary on the modern world through breathtaking and avant-garde visuals and editing, Bowie delivered a superb performance, earning himself a place in film history. Although the film received mixed reviews at the time of release, it still received positive reviews and an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes and also gained a cult following due to its huge audience. The film also received several award nominations and earned Bowie the Saturn Award for Best Actor.
The film is also considered to be one of Rogue’s finest works of all time. Several decades later, The Man Who Fell to Earth also received a television series in 2022, with Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 years of slavery) as a humanoid alien. Each of the ten episodes is named after popular Bowie songs such as “Hello Spaceboy” and “Under Pressure”.
Since his debut single “Liza Jane” in 1964, the English singer-songwriter has released a number of timeless classics, including “Space Oddity”, “Sound and Vision” and “Life on Mars?”. The late singer is also the subject of Brett Morgen’s 2022 documentary. moon dream, which explores Bowie’s creative and musical journey. And now, on top of Bowie’s already colorful career, The Man Who Fell to Earth has been restored and will be available for purchase on April 25th.
