Content Warning: The following article contains spoilers for The Last of Us and The Walking Dead.Since debuting on HBO in mid-January 2023 Last of us exploded in popularity. Based on the video game of the same name, the series is often compared to the AMC series. the walking Deadanother popular post-apocalyptic drama inspired by the pandemic.
Indeed, while both Last of us And the walking Dead have their own storylines, they do have some parallels. It starts right at the start of the outbreak in the first episode of both shows. Some similarities between shows, which include scripts, settings, and even characters, are more pronounced than others.
1 Walkers want flesh
Both shows feature, for lack of a better term, walking-undead-former-humans who have somehow been infected. Last of usZombie-like creatures are much more agile and perceptive than seemingly mindless and slow-moving creatures on the walking Dead. But they have one thing in common: they want to feast on human flesh.
This commonality between both shows led to some gruesome scenes of the undead hunched over the dead, sometimes still living bodies of others. For the walking Deadthe only reason is to fuel themselves, and once they get their hands on a human, it’s feast time, making the walking Dead one of the best zombie shows to watch for its nasty but compelling scenes. IN Last of ushowever, eaters also seek to spread the virus, and do so in unique ways that make it even better.
2 Natural Leader Protagonist
Last of us begins with the protagonist Joel, who quickly becomes a natural leader. His ability to lead is first shown when he and his brother discover that something terrible is happening and elope with Joel’s teenage daughter to find a safe haven. IN the walking DeadMeanwhile, the main character, Rick Grimes, was a natural born leader who people trusted and wanted to follow.
Joel may not have been a police sheriff like Rick Grimes, but the two organically bring others together to work out a plan. While Joel apparently went down the path of a Daryl Dixon-like loner after his daughter’s death, his leadership qualities are still evident, even 20 years later, just like Rick’s has been for more than a decade since the apocalyptic scenario began on this series. . .
3 Child injured
Teen Sarah sadly meets her end in the first episode Last of us. Although it takes much longer to the walking Dead for Sophia to die at the hands of a walker bite (followed by a headshot after being resuscitated), the concept of a teenager or a teenager getting hurt or killed is shared between the two shows.
Despite Last of us just begun, Sarah’s death may have been as painful as Sophia’s. Moreover, Joel’s reaction when he grabbed her dead body was reminiscent of Carol’s when she fell to the ground, distraught at the sight of her dead daughter.
4 cheeky child
scene stealer Last of us this is Ellie, a teenage girl who is assigned by Joel to escort around the US, believing that in doing so she may hold the key to a cure. This is good, because Ellie is extremely important to the plot. Last of us. Besides the fact that this storyline is similar to the one in the walking Dead causing Abraham and Rosita to travel with Eugene believing he knows where to find the cure, Ellie’s personality is generally similar to other kids from the walking Dead.
In particular, she can be compared to Judith, another child born in the apocalypse who only knows the previous world from books. They are both brash, skilled with a knife (and a gun) and very independent. Two young girls could be friends if they existed in the same TV universe.
5 Communities come together
The community was a big part the walking Dead and will likely continue through its many upcoming spin-offs, including Daryl Dixon, The walking Dead; Dead city, as well as an untitled Rick and Michonne spin-off. Communities depicted so far on Last of us not as tight-knit and not as tight-knit as military units, than unfortunate groups of survivors who come together to sort things out.
But there is a sense of community among those working in the FEDRA (Federal Disaster Response Agency)-managed quarantine zone, as well as among the outcast Firefly group who are trying to start their own revolution. The setup is much more tactical and structured in Last of usbut while communities may not be as sweet and innocent as people like Daryl, Carol, Andrea and Michonne from all walks of life coming together on the walking Deadnevertheless they are.
6 Post-apocalyptic scenario
The most obvious similarity between the two shows is that they both follow a post-apocalyptic scenario in which the survivors of a global pandemic are on their own. They must search for food, water and other resources, fight enemies and do whatever is necessary to survive.
In both cases, it is an infection that actually leads to the end of civilization as it has been known up to this point. The city and probably the whole world lie in ruins, the buildings are abandoned and destroyed, the buildings are worn out, the plants are destroyed, and most of the people are long gone.
7 The beginning of the outbreak
One of the worst decisions the walking Dead ever did, keeps the origin of the pandemic a secret for so long. In fact, this is just starting to surface now that the show has officially ended and several spin-offs are in the works that will explore the survivors and their search for answers. On Last of us, fans know from the start that it was a mutation in a genus called Cordyceps that caused the outbreak and the symptoms. Although the cause is different, in both shows, the outbreak infects people and turns them into some form of carnivorous monster.
Last of us shows a Jakarta mycologist who is called to examine a sample, and she reacts with horror to what she sees because she knows what it means. On the walking DeadMeanwhile, Rick learns from Dr. Edwin Jenner of the CDC (Center for Disease Control) that everyone is infected and revives after death, whether they are bitten or not. These two authority figures play a key role in both shows, adding a sense of reality to the moment when someone knows what’s about to happen before it even happens.
8 Grotesque and unique types of walkers
the walking Dead was known for his prosthetics and make-up, creating some of the most memorable zombies to ever appear on television. Among them were the bloated well that Glenn encountered at the start of the season, charred and burnt walkers, and Winslow, a pile walker who was covered in armor and spikes, making him virtually unkillable.
On Last of us, several walkers that have been discovered so far have their own unique characteristics. Fans have learned that they can hear very well but fail to see, which makes sense given their monstrous mushroom heads that suggest a fungal infection. Then there is a memorable walker kiss scene with Tess, where one of them kisses her open-mouthed, with tentacles crawling out of his lips. Both shows feature zombies that are equally terrifying and entertaining.
9 Meeting people along the way
Joel and Ellie are sure to meet a few people along the way as they embark on their journey across Last of uslike Shane, Laurie and Carl did in the walking Dead before Rick woke up from his coma and returned to them. For a while, these three adults were among the best the walking Dead trio. Several additional characters have appeared Last of uslike Frank and Bill, two survivalists living in an isolated town that the couple stumble upon.
Meanwhile, other characters that will be introduced in future episodes Last of us Among them are Kathleen, the leader of a revolutionary movement in Kansas, two young brothers named Henry and Sam, who are hiding from the movement, and a married couple, Marlon and Florence, who live in the desert. Most likely, all these characters will have analogues on the walking Dead who fans can compare them to, and some will be classified as villains and others as allies.
10 General appearance
Both shows have an overall ominous look and feel, with elaborate sets that incorporate a lot of darkness and create a chilling sense of doom. Buildings are dilapidated or even demolished, plant life is almost non-existent, and animals seem to have disappeared as well. The idea of dead bodies surrounding everyone, everywhere, has become commonplace.
the walking Dead didn’t take a time jump to delve deeper into how bad things are until much later in the series. But both depict a world in ruins long after the initial appearance of the virus.
