The new Batman movie, which will feature a new actor as Bruce Wayne, will focus on Damian Wayne, Bruce’s son. Robin hasn’t appeared on the big screen since 1997. However, it looks like DC and Warner Brothers missed out on a great opportunity to launch a spin-off of Robin in the Nolanverse in the title role. Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
It has always been a struggle to present Robin on the big screen in a modern way. Bye Burt WardPerfectly suited to the campy, tongue-in-cheek 1966 film, O’Donnell felt like a whiny boy, which only contrasted with Bruce’s more serious demeanor. No wonder the most successful cinematic Robin was Michael Ceravocal performance in Lego Batman Movie, as he intentionally parodied the character’s obnoxious nature. However, Gordon-Levitt is an actor of incredible caliber who could certainly play his own role as Robin.
End Rise of the dark knight teases that ex-cop John Blake’s real name is Robin, and the movie ends with a brilliant shot of Blake raised in the Batcave. Though it was clearly the end Christian Balestay in the franchise and signaled that Bruce’s future was bright, it meant passing the torch to Blake to protect Gotham. With a compelling backstory, Blake essentially learned everything he could from Bruce in the limited amount of time they spent together. It’s rather disappointing that he wasn’t given the opportunity to host his own series, as Snyder’s hard reboot has moved even further away from Nolan’s rugged Gotham City.

While several different characters have taken on the mantle of Batman in the vast history of DC comics, for all intents and purposes, most people would identify Bruce Wayne as the one and only Batman. However, Robin has been played by Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Damian Wayne, and Carrie Kelly, and each had their own iconic adventures. This creates fluidity in the character’s story; in the Nolan universe, the idea of John “Robin” Blake’s costume makes perfect sense.
Blake’s character arc in the film is the perfect origin story for Robin. He is an orphan who has always identified with Batman and has similarly chosen to seek justice under the mentorship of Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman). Ultimately, Blake helps Bruce save the city from Bane (Tom Hardy) and Talia Al Ghul (Marion Cotillard), but he begins to question the integrity of Gotham’s police force after seeing their reaction to the city during a crisis. Blake is burdened with what he knows, so Bruce gives him the keys to the Batcave and its technology.
Gordon-Levitt would be the perfect lead; he has proven himself in films such as start Looper, And Premium Rush that he can play a legitimate action hero, but at the same time has the dramatic experience of films like 50/50, Trial of Chicago 7, Snowden, And Walk this shows that he can flesh out a dramatic character. He’s charismatic and funny, unlike Bale, and the sight of an older, more mature version of Robin might appeal to those who weren’t interested in the character before. It also helps that Gordon-Levitt already has veteran support built in; since Blake remained close to Gordon Oldman, Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) and Alfred (Michael Caine), it would make sense to bring back these characters and legendary actors as his allies in another installment.
Nolan’s “Batman” universe is long gone, taking with it the possibility of Robin Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Christopher Nolan stated emphatically that his Batman story was over and that he would not be returning to direct or write another installment; Similarly, Bale vowed that he would never reprise the role without Nolan’s input. This doesn’t stop the making of the Robin movie, it just means that the baton will be passed on to another creative team. Obviously, a Robin movie starring Gordon-Levitt would never have been possible for Gunn’s new DCU - Nolan’s Batverse is a separate entity, unrelated to Gunn’s DCU in any way.
Considering that both The Dark Knight And Rise of the dark knight were co-written with Christopher Nolan’s brother, Jonathan Nolan, it would be great to see another Nolan brother writing Robin’s next adventure. Jonathan Nolan has already written scripts for other directors, and his work on Western world And Peripheral proved that his style could be used by another ambitious director. Western world And Peripheral both are tactfully expanding and fleshing out their respective fictional universes, so giving Nolan the reins of the larger Gotham City universe would be very exciting. One can only imagine the possibilities if the Nolan universe had continued (even without Christopher Nolan’s direction) - some of the antagonists from the previous trilogy could reappear alongside any new emerging threats. At the end The Dark Knight The Scarecrow Trilogy by Dr. Jonathan CraneCillian Murphy), again escapes justice, as do all the other criminals in Blackgate Prison and Arkham Asylum freed by Bane.
Gotham city that stands at the end Rise of the dark knight it is one that heals but is not perfect. Despite the defeat of the League of Shadows, the city’s criminals are on the loose and the institutions are destroyed. Watching Gotham City rebuild and develop would be an exciting storyline and could help give the new trilogy a unique aesthetic of its own. While Nolan’s universe does not include any supernatural elements, there are plenty of down-to-earth Batman stories that could serve as inspiration for the next chapter of Robin.
Disappointing that DC was rushing to launch a new universe so quickly after Man of Steel and tarnished the legacy Nolan left behind. A Gordon-Levitt Robin film would captivate audiences who loved The Dark Knight a trilogy that remains the most popular and successful solo franchise in DC Comics history. Possibly alternate universes under Gunn’s “Other Worlds” brand, including Matt Reeves’ Batman And Todd Phillips Joker may expand to another entry in Nolan’s universe. Unlikely, but you can dream.
