What could be scarier than artificial intelligence predicting every move of a nation? One who became intelligent and became a swindler. Over the years, there have been many shows and films depicting the end of humanity at the hands of AI. This is not the current reality, but it often seems plausible.

Of course, well-made films can make people believe that anything is possible. Many of the portrayals of intelligent AI simply reflect the fact that humans rely too much on technology; While it’s better than ever when it comes to technological progress, the prediction that artificial intelligence could turn against humans is a story as old as time that has been well portrayed in every movie on this list.

“M3GAN” (2023)

girl walking down the corridor

A new and terrifying story about a killer doll that comes to life. M3GAN The premiere in theaters is scheduled for January. It’s a great way to start the year as horror films seem to be enjoying a quality renaissance. M3GAN co-wrote and produced James Wanand it features a modern scream queen Allison Williams (Get out, Perfection).

M3GAN is an AI doll designed to be a little girl’s companion and protector. However, her programming takes it literally, eliminating anything and everything that puts the girl in danger. From the looks of it, this will be a James Wan classic - an intriguing story with great visuals and plenty of jump scares.

“Out of the car” (2014)

Alicia Vikander as Ava and Sonoya Mizuno as Kyoko

No one can convey the inconvenience of technological progress better than Alex Garland. He did it with DEVELOPERSbut before this show he did it with From the car. Oscar Isaac, Donhall Gleason, Sonoya Mizunoand Alicia Vikander star in this tense and dark film that has almost certainly become a modern cult classic.

From the car tells of a young programmer, Caleb, who is chosen to spend time in the home of a reclusive scientist (Isaac), testing the humanoid Ava (Vikander). Caleb discusses various topics with Ava, getting to know her and her intentions more. The secluded but beautiful home they spend time in sets the tone for the film, a futuristic space with the most advanced technology, immersed in the depths of nature. Garland’s idea to unite them never ceases to amaze.

‘Tau’ (2018)

Mike Monroe slowly built her career as a scream queen, and Tau this is just one of the films that confirm this title for her. Tau tells the story of a scientist played by Ed Skrein, which creates a futuristic smart home called Tau, which can take on any form of control. Monroe plays Julia, who is kidnapped by a scientist and forced to survive at home.

Although Julia was expected to help the scientist complete the experiment and improve it, Tau has a different idea. For him, destruction is inevitable, and disobedience to his orders results in instant (and usually violent) death. This gripping sci-fi thriller with horror elements is tense, gripping and full of action scenes.

“Alien” (1979)

Sigourney Weaver in Alien (1979)

Alien, a movie and sci-fi classic, was one of the original rogue AI scary stories - though that’s sort of a spoiler, sorry. However, most fans of the genre have probably already seen this legendary Ridley Scott feature and know what the story is, starring Sigourney Weaverit’s all about.

For those who haven’t seen the movie, a crew of astronauts on a commercial spacecraft wakes up to a transmission from space. As they go to investigate, they stumble upon what appears to be alien lifeforms. I don’t want to spoil it, but the evil robot is a major plot twist and it’s best left to newcomers. This movie remains one of my all-time favorites, and the latest sequel even has a fantastically portrayed (and also rogue) AI. Alien: Covenant.

‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (1968)

2001 Space Odyssey (1968) (1)

Another early depiction of evil AI comes from none other than Stanley Kubrick. Him 2001: Space Odyssey was recently voted the best film of all time by various directors in a Sight and Sound poll. This choice was not unexpected - Odyssey it’s a visual masterpiece with a story that was arguably way ahead of its time.

The astronauts travel to investigate the artifact in a ship equipped with the HAL 9000 supercomputer. HAL has a human personality and survival skills that most people have, if not better. Aside from its gripping and somewhat chilling story, the film is an invitation to enjoy cinema in its purest form. Symmetry, beauty and art come together and depict a fantastic story.

“I, Robot” (2004)

Will Smith and Bridget Moynahan in I, Robot

I am a robot - one of the most famous modern action movies, in which robots potentially become rogues and develop consciousness. The story, however, is not so new - it was written by one of the fathers of science fiction, the writer Isaac Asimov. History I am a robot comes from Asimov Robot stories collection.

Will Smith plays a technophobic detective investigating a murder; he suspects that it was a robot who did it, though it’s impossible for anyone but him, as robots in society are programmed to do no harm. It is shown throughout the feature that the robots definitely have a secret, including a well-developed consciousness.

Blade Runner (1982)

Blade Runner - 1982

Although the events of the original Blade Runner take place in 2019, the main character is Deckard (Harrison Ford) lives in a far more dystopian future than what is known today. Interestingly, this is the second work by Ridley Scott on the list; Scott has been at the helm of some of the most loved and underrated feature films.

For people who haven’t seen Blade Runner, it’s 2019, and Deckard is Blade Runner, the officer in charge of destroying rogue robots called “replicants.” Now he must find four rogue replicants wreaking havoc and committing various crimes in Los Angeles. The rogue AIs are obvious and are the reason for the plot, so no spoilers. Blade Runner was based on Philip K. Dickshort story “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”

“Colossus: The Forbin Project” (1970)

Getting out of control of supercomputers always seems possible; even in 1970 this trope was studied and well thought out. Colossus: The Forbin Project was based on D. F. Jones a novel simply titled The Colossus. The premise is simple: The US government believes that the Colossus supercomputer can be programmed to secure the nation’s nuclear codes, which is why it does so.

However, after an extensive scan, Colossus discovers the Guardian, a supercomputer similar to it but controlled by the Soviet Union. He insists on connecting with the Guardian, manipulating and plotting unimaginable schemes against humanity. This is a nifty and thought-provoking sci-fi feature that every fan of the genre should see.

Update (2018)

Refresh

Update may not fully fall into the category of rogue AI, but it shows what artificial intelligence is capable of. This is an underrated modern science fiction classic; Logan Marshall-Green plays technophobe Grey, whose wife works for a well-known technology company. One day, he asks her to help him get the self-driving car back, but the car breaks down and they have an accident.

Gray’s wife dies and he becomes paralyzed; while under the care of his mother, he receives a lifelong offer - to receive an experimental high-tech chip implant that could restore his bodily functions to him, and much more. Gray is controlled by an artificial intelligence chip in his head, which is the perfect combination of human and machine. The trail is based on revenge, but the story is original and very interesting.

“Westworld” (1973)

The story most often thought of when rogue AIs are mentioned is none other than Western world. Although the HBO series is famous (and was canceled after four seasons), fans may not know that it was based on the feature film of the same name. Western world tells about the Delos amusement park with robots as characters from the Wild West, Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages.

On Delos, people can visit and realize any fantasies and ideas, so this is a kind of amusement park for the rich. movie stars Yul Brynner as a robot shooter and James Brolin as a human visitor being chased by the Gunslinger. Despite some shortcomings, Western world it is a highly influential sci-fi thriller, visually very beautiful.
