Amazons The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power the series quickly became one of the streaming service’s most popular series. Although the series does not directly follow the plot of a particular novel, it builds on the work J. R. R. Tolkien. Starting with Tolkien’s established fanbase, this can only help the show as it takes fans to Middle-earth. But Rings of Power It’s not the first time people have entered a fictional world through a screen. Tolkien’s works have been filmed many times, but the most famous is Peter Jacksona series of films. Rings of Power introduces many of the characters that appear in Lord of the Rings and hobbit movies, but the show is not directly related to the movies. While the series seems to have been aimed at looking the same as the films, it has a different creative team and is not officially tied to any previous interpretation of Middle-earth. However, since both are adapted from the same source material, the two stories fit together quite well. It is easy to imagine that they are in the same world. With Rings of Power taking place long before the events in the films, there is room for some inconsistency, but without being painfully distracting. And by giving backstories to central characters like Gandalf, Elrond, and Sauron, the show could boost re-watching of Jackson’s films.

The series has been slow to reveal The StrangerDaniel Weiman) personality. Although the name “Gandalf” has not yet been used, it is heavily implied that the Stranger is the same wizard from Lord of the Rings, with direct quotes from the character and an emphasis on his relationship with the smallest creatures of Middle-earth. Throughout Tolkien’s story, Gandalf is one of the few outsiders the hobbits accept, though many still have doubts. The show slowly builds his relationship with the Harfoots, the ancestors of the Hobbits. Showing how this suspicious society learns to trust the wizard, the series explains his connection to the hobbits generations later. Rings of Power specifically focuses on his friendship with Nori Brandyfoot (Markella Caveno), a mischievous young Harfoot with a thirst for adventure.

The description is similar to Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) from Lord of the Rings. Frodo, like Hobbit’Bilbo Baggins (English)Martin Freeman), has a long relationship with Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen In movie). Together with friends Frodo Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), the Baggins descend from a long line of adventuring hobbits, and Gandalf is familiar with this family history. It doesn’t seem like a jump to think that Nori could be the start of it all, including Gandalf’s connection to the hobbits. By expanding on Gandalf’s story with the hobbits (or Harfoots), the series makes his interactions with Frodo and Bilbo more impressive and explains why Gandalf chose to take these characters on his journey in the first place.

Elrond’s friendship with Durin

Another friendship that is given a lot of time in the series is that of Elrond (Robert Aramayo) with Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur). The friendship between an elf and a dwarf is reminiscent of Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) in Lord of the Rings. But it’s not just that, as Elrond interacts with the dwarves later in life. Despite the enmity between the two races, Elrond (Hugo Weaving in the movies) welcomes Gimili into his home, just like the dwarves in hobbit movies. AT hobbit, Thorin OakenshieldRichard Armitage) and several of the dwarves in his band are Durrin’s descendants. Gimili is also from this family.

Examining Elrond’s past friendship with Durrin, his later acceptance of the other Dwarves despite the rivalry is highlighted. This makes his decision to welcome these dwarves to Rivendell much more meaningful given his connection to their ancestor. Elrond plays a relatively small role in the films, but the show gives him more attention, effectively nurturing the character. Giving Elrond a story helps explain his point of view in Lord of the Rings. And as the series progresses, it may help viewers understand his resistance to daughter Arwen (Liv Tyler) love for Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen).

Sauron’s transformation into a human

Once again, Sauron’s personality was a big twist in Rings of power. While Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) was introduced early, until the last episode it was not revealed that he is a dark lord. Many fans predicted who Sauron would become, and many were wrong. Unlike filmsRings of Power gave Sauron a face, making him a man, not an evil force in Lord of the Rings. The show depicts his rise to power, while in Lord of the Rings, he is a sudden threat. In the movies, he’s a historical evil that most thought had been wiped out, so Rings of Power gives this background. The films recap the events in a prologue. But the series dives into them and offers a deeper explanation of why Sauron is a threat, showing what he is capable of.

The humanization of Sauron in the series makes danger in Lord of the Rings seem more real to viewers as it gives context to his past. It is also shown how he interacts with Galadriel (Morfydd Clark in the series). Her initial friendship with Halbrand leads to him tempting her with power when she finds out who he is. And much later, in Lord of the Rings, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) is again tempted by the ring. In a moment of weakness, she repeats the words spoken to her by Sauron. Galadriel’s refusal to take the ring makes more sense in the context of the series and makes her temptation all the more interesting.

With Rings of Power serves as a kind of history for Lord of the Rings, there are many connections through the knowledge of the world. One example is Elendil (Lloyd Owen) and his son Isildur (Maxim Baldry), who are the ancestors of Aragorn. Their history is directly connected with the meaning of Aragorn, who became the king of Gondor. As the show explores these characters, it will allow more fans to understand the story behind it all. Incidentally, these characters and their Númenórean blood allow Aragorn to live as long as he does. The show explores Númenor’s connection to the Valar and the half-elf Elros, which explains Aragorn’s extended lifespan.

Rings of Power also shows the history of Khazad-dum, or Moria, as he is mentioned in Lord of the Rings. The show explains the mithril in more detail and explores the origins of the Balrog. Connect or not Rings of Power reinforces Lord of the Rings making knowledge more accessible to a wider audience. These two depictions of Middle-earth complement each other despite not being officially related to each other. Rings of Power provides a lesson in Middle-earth history to those unfamiliar with Tolkien’s writings, and as such it reinforces Jackson’s interpretation of the world even without a direct connection between the two.
