HBO Max filmed a bilingual comedy show Los Espuquis from the list of returning shows. According to Deadline, the streamer canceled the show due to low ratings for its second season, which recently premiered after a long hiatus. The second-season premiere was positively received by critics, but the Spanish-language series struggled to reach the minimum number of viewers HBO needed to stay afloat.
The action takes place in Mexico City. Los Espuquis centered around a group of crazy friends who know so much about horror that they decide to monetize their passion by creating imaginary horror movie-like situations to fool their target audience. The first season premiered in June 2019 and, according to Nielsen, each of the six episodes was watched live by an average of about 156,000 people. A month later, the show was renewed for a second season, but production progress was delayed due to the COVID pandemic, leaving production running for nearly three years until the premiere of the second season in September 2022. This long lull seems to be over. this affected the show’s ability to thrive as viewership was halved when season 2 finally premiered.
“We are thrilled to be able to present a unique and fun second season. Los Espuquis finally to viewers, more than three years after the series premiered due to pandemic delays,” HBO said in a statement. “We thank Julio, Ana and Fred for this creative and delightfully whimsical world they created. We are not currently planning a third season, but would welcome the opportunity to work with this cast and crew in the future.” FROM Los Espuquis with a stellar 100% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say the cancellation doesn’t reflect the show’s quality, and it’s good to see HBO recognize this in their decision to continue working with one of the show’s creators. Julio Torreswho, together with other co-authors Ana Fabrega as well as Fred Armisen formed the main cast of the show.
Torres signed a first-view deal with HBO, which remains in effect. As part of the deal, Torres is currently developing two projects for the streamer, including a comedy series. small films and the series “Self-Perception” Happy.

Ramirez River, Giannina Fruttero, Carmen Gloria Breschi, Eudora Peterson, Greta Titelman, Spike Einbinder, Sam Taggart, Kim Petras, Isabella Rosellinias well as Yalitza Aparicio. Armisen, Fabrega and Torres were executive producers along with Lorne Michaels as well as Andrew Singer Broadway video, and Alice Matia.
