Disney+ has announced the start of production and unveiled the main cast of the upcoming Australian period drama adaptation. agile dodger during its Asia Pacific showcase event in Singapore on Wednesday evening. Cast headliners Thomas Brodie-Sangster as well as David Thewlis.
Thewlis will play Fagin, one of the original’s antagonists. Charles Dickens novel, Oliver Twist, while Brodie-Sangster takes on the lead role as Jack Dawkins, known by his nickname “The Slick Trickster”. The adaptation, which Disney first announced back in May, has been described as an international character drama set in 1850s Australia, giving it an alternative vibe to Dickens’ original London volume. The eight-episode miniseries revolves around Dawkins trying to lead a double life, trying to be legal while working as a surgeon, but struggling to rid himself of his desire to cheat and return to crime. Disney describes the series this way:
“From high-octane heists to life-and-death operations, glitzy parties and colorful streets, this series is a rock ‘n’ roll tale with an Australian touch.”
The Artful Dodger originally appeared as a minor character, a famous anti-hero, in Oliver Twist, known as the most dexterous thief and the most talented pickpocket in Fagin’s gang. Developed and experienced beyond his years, he first introduces Oliver to Fagin and acts much older than his years. He trains Oliver to become a talented thief in his own right. In the end, he is unable to resist the temptation and ends up betraying Oliver for his own gain.
Brodie-Sangster initially rose to fame as a child actor, appearing as Liam Neesonstepson in love Real loveas well as the appearance next to Emma Thompson in Nanny McPhee. As an adult, he appeared in maze runner franchises, and Game of Thrones and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in Queen’s Gambit in 2020. Thewlis is a prolific English actor who has appeared in many projects, the most commercially successful and popular being his role as Remus Lupin in Harry Potter franchise. He will also appear in Avatar 3due out in 2024.
The series will be produced Geoffrey Walkerknown for his work on Young Rock, House of Commons as well as Modern family. Walker also manages, along with Corrie Chen as well as Gracie Otto.
The series will be filmed in New South Wales, Australia with state government funding through the Screen NSW Made In NSW Foundation. The series is expected to release on Disney+ in late 2023.
