There have been so many amazing Christmas events over the past decades. This year director James Gunn added to the Holiday Treasury with Infinitely Delicious Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Edition. There were so many memorable moments in this intergalactic Christmas adventure, but one of the most talked about aspects was the animation pieces that marked the release. Now, Gunn has shared a new behind-the-scenes image that takes off the layers of their classic animation.
The image sees the actors Michael Rooker as well as Luke Kleinwho played Yondu and a young Peter Quill respectively in full costume on set holiday offer. Rooker is holding the toy that Peter gave him in the special issue that became the focus of the whole story. Fans may be surprised that Rooker and Klein physically acted out their scenes, but Gunn said they used an old-school rotoscoping animation style that was heavily inspired by Rankin and Bass’s classic Christmas specials from the 70s and 80s. This renowned studio’s legendary library includes Frosty the Snowman, Red-nosed deer Rudolphas well as Santa Claus rides to the city. The work was done by the amazing Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, who traced the live action footage frame by frame to create an authentic holiday feel. They also added things like Yondu’s iconic fin, and the studio changed Klein’s facial features to look more like a young Peter.
This hybrid approach to the special was one of its best features. He linked it lovingly to the past of Christmas, showing that this kind of joyful art style still has a place in today’s media. It also helped that the nostalgic animation looked great, which shouldn’t be a surprise since Stoopid Buddy Stoodios has been working on it. Robot Chicken, MODOK by Marveland they just released Mickey Saves Christmas on Disney+.
It’s a miracle holiday offer everything was sweet, joyful and emotional. The Christmas setting wasn’t just a one-time gimmick. This was important in advancing the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy before their final chapter together. Whether it was Drax and Mantis trying to kidnap Kevin Bacon to give Peter the best possible Christmas, Mantis’ heartfelt sibling storyline with Peter, or Peter’s animated backstory with Yondu, it was the perfect Marvel Christmas story. Having Yondu as “Scrooge” in this story was perfect, while learning the true meaning of Christmas through Peter’s kindness, beautifully reimagining their already complicated father-son relationship.
Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Edition currently streaming on Disney+. It was the perfect gift for Marvel fans this year as we prepare for the end. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May next year.
