9-1-1 showrunner Kristen Reidel talked about the season 6 winter finale, touching on key moments in the episode, including Buck becoming the biological father and that tragic death. The executive producer also spoke about what viewers can expect from the second half of the season, which will air in the spring.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, 9-1-1 showrunner Reidel spoke about the winter finale death and its impact on Bobby’s recovery. “Bobby is recovering and Bobby will always recover. It’s a huge part of his life and who he is as a person. It’s not the only thing, but it’s a big part of it,” Reidel said of fire captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) addiction to alcohol and drugs. The showrunner explained that his AA sponsor (Wendall, played by Maurice Irwin) death had a profound effect on him. “As well as [Wendall’s death] seemed like an interesting way to talk about it without Bobby getting off track. Wendall was a very important part of the person Bobby is now and the life he has now.” She went on to explain that the effects of Wendall’s death also reached the Nash family and would affect the rest of the storyline. “In many ways, Wendall impacted not only Bobby’s life, but the life of the entire family – because Bobby had to turn to Wendall instead of drugs or alcohol, and it made their lives better.”
Reidel revealed that Wendall’s death would be a strong focus in the second half of the season, with Bobby “looking for the truth about what really happened” with his sponsor. The second half will also show how the two characters first met. “…We will feel what kind of relationship with Wendall was meant for Bobby and also for Athena. [Angela Bassett]. We’ll see Bobby and Athena - and a bit of May [Corinne Massiah] “Try to find out what happened to Wendall and also what’s going on in this institution that is supposed to help people but seems to be mocking them.”
In the same interview, Reidel also talked about the importance of Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark) becoming a biological father and the lasting impact of his decision to help the couple have children. “When Buck made this decision to become a sperm donor, he came from a kind of dedication. He saw two people who needed help and had the opportunity to help, and he thought, “Of course I have to help these people,” Reidel said of Buck’s original intent. The showrunner explained that Buck didn’t quite think things through, and that going forward, the true impact of his decision would become clearer to him and he would question his choice. “I think he never thought about what he did or didn’t want to get out of it. And now it’s not a theoretical baby. He has a lot to figure out when this baby gets closer, because the relationship with sperm donors can be different: some are never known, others are involved in the child’s life.”
Winter season finale 9-1-1 also saw other members of the longtime 118 drama team go through some significant changes, with more drama promised in the second half. Maddie was seen in the episode (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and chimney (Kenneth Choi) find the “murder house” of their dreams, which Rydel says will be “a new beginning and a new beginning” for the couple and their daughter. “This is a new level of commitment for them. Also, it’s a really beautiful house - a little intimidating when you first look at it, but it will be perfectly renovated,” she said. Meanwhile, hyungAisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracey Toms) son Denny (Declan Pratt) was at war with himself over the decision to find his biological father (Nathaniel, played by Troy Winbush). “It’s so difficult because Danny clearly has questions and wants to know where he came from and who are the people who gave him life,” Reidel explained. “But on the other hand, he really loves his mothers and doesn’t want to hurt them, so he tries to figure it out. He’s trying to get answers without involving his moms - that’s an understandable solution, but probably not the best.”
Made Brad Falchuk, Tim Minearas well as Ryan MurphyAs the series deals with the high-stakes pressures that first responders face, the second half of Season 6 will see more drama and “crazy”. “When we return, we will be dealing with an unusual weather problem. , which is basically thunder and lightning without rain - lightning that strikes out of nowhere and creates some emergencies,” Reidel hinted, before promising “the episodes you’re looking forward to” as well as “some other things that [they’ve] has never been done before.”
