2023 promises to be another stellar year for cinema. In terms of animation, this includes the highly anticipated release Movie Super Mario Bros. from Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment. Chris PrattAdventure in the Mushroom Kingdom hits theaters next April. Now, ahead of its second trailer, Nintendo has released a new image teasing Princess Peach’s role in the upcoming movie.
The image shows the film’s interpretation of Peach Castle. Basically the stained glass window of Peach, which is in the castle in all past Mario games. However, it looks like the window was moved from under the front door behind Peach’s throne. As with Super Mario Odyssey, a red velvet staircase leads to the throne. What’s missing from the image is Peach herself. Though we know it’s amazing Anya Taylor-Joy voices the iconic princess in the film, the character has been absent from all marketing campaigns so far. This seems to be changing from Super Mario Bros. A second trailer as the message accompanying this new image reads “The castle awaits.” In classic Mario fashion, the castle text is replaced with a funny castle emoji. In another post with the same image, Nintendo of America confirmed that the new trailer will debut in the latest release. Movie Super Mario Bros. Live Tuesday, November 29th at 2pm PT on their YouTube channel.
While most of the talk around this film has been about Pratt voicing Mario, the first trailer released last month presented a fun, gorgeous and colorful film that feels like a blazing love letter to the most adored gaming franchise. We have great teasers for characters like Jack Blackbowser, Keegan Michael Keytoad and Charlie DayLuigi, but expect a lot more pink in the next trailer. There’s a lot to be said about the cast of this movie, but it’s not like Taylor-Joy wasn’t born to play Peach. She is so perfect that the actress could play this character in a feature film.
While Taylor-Joy is best known for her horror films in modern classics such as Witch, Northerner, Last Night in Sohoas well as Menuthe actress showed off her brilliant comedic skills in the criminally underrated Emma fixture. For that reason alone, it will be very interesting to see what kind of energy she brings to the role and how her voice will sound. We’ll likely see more of the movie’s plot in this trailer, which hopefully doesn’t involve Bowser kidnapping Peach like most games do. Taylor-Joy is too good to be wasted on a story like this.
Whatever the case, Taylor-Joy will be joined by Pratt, Day, Black, Key, Seth Rogenand original voice actor Mario Charles Martinet when Movie Super Mario Bros. will hit theaters April 7, 2023. Before the new trailer is released, you can check out the new Peach-focused image below along with the previously released teaser.
