Although Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Stories was definitely the darker part of the saga, it was still a story about the struggle between good and evil. However, Disney+ Andor blurred those lines. Cassian (Diego Luna) is not a simple hero. At the beginning of the first episode, Cassian kills two officers outside a brothel after they try to run him over. His malicious actions draw the attention of some of the show’s main antagonists.
Kyle Soller stars in the series as Cyril Karn, a Preox Morlan security inspector who leads the mission to find Cassian. Karn defies our notions of what a “villain” looks like. He is incredibly dedicated to his work, but often goes further than his superiors. First three series Andor show your incompetence when it comes to mission leadership. Also, he’s not as intimidating as some of the other Imperial officers in star Wars franchise. Karn gets almost everything wrong in the first three episodes.
Karn character arc throughout AndorThe first season will be interesting. Perhaps Cassian’s latest escape and the rise of resistance forces will cheer Karn up and make him more committed to his role as Imperial servant. The resistance is getting radical and it’s safe to say that the Empire is too.
What is the position and mission of Karn
Karn works for the Preox-Morlun corporate conglomerate, a tactical force employed by the Galactic Empire. Pre-Mora security forces are monitoring several planets on the outskirts of the galaxy, including Morlana-4 and Ferrix. They base their operations on the planet Morlana One. While Pre-Mor officers are combat trained, they are not as ruthless as stormtroopers. Karn isn’t even one of the most violent members; he is a little unnerved by his squad’s excitement over the raid on the city on Ferrix.
Karn’s opening scene is actually somewhat comedic. Although he is determined to track down whoever is responsible for the deaths of the two officers on Morlun 4, his superior, Chief Hein (Rupert Vansittart), would rather hide the fact that two of his subordinates were spotted by the brothel. Karn refuses to let him go. He leads a task force of a dozen officers to Ferrix in search of Cassian, whose identity and homeworld have been revealed. Karn is eager to prove his merit.
Karn’s operation on Ferrix takes a turn for the worse
Karn awkwardly gives a speech to the people under his command and says, “There comes a time when the risk of doing nothing becomes the biggest risk.” Even if Karn is determined to justify the raid, his comrades seem just thrilled to be beating up innocent civilians. However, his recklessness has some consequences. As his men surround the warehouse where Cassian meets Luten Rael (Stellan Skarsgard), a local resident beats a drum to signal their approach.
Karn manages to intercept a message that Cassian sent to his adoptive mother, Maarva (Fiona Shaw). He and his fellow premor officer Sergeant Linus Mosk (Alex Ferns) plans to surprise them. However, Cassian and Luten are able to escape the warehouse by using the pulley system to take out the Pre-Mor officers. This is where Karn’s lack of experience costs him; he slowly realizes that Ferrix’s people are turning against them.
Cassian puts a gun to Karn’s head and demands information. Although Luten insists on killing Karn, Cassian decides to let him go. Pre-Mor is still in a state of shock when he meets his fellow officers in the middle of the street. As Luten prepares the speeder for the explosion, killing Karn’s squad in a fiery explosion, he is humiliated as the two men escape. It is unlikely that he will forget meeting with them.
This raises some questions about Karn’s future on the show. The dead acted on his orders; he failed in his attempt to prove himself to the Empire, leaving the city destroyed, several pre-mors killed, and one civilian. Will he show Cassian the same mercy that he did, or has the experience further strengthened his determination to catch the criminal? We also know that Karn’s backstory can be explored further, as Katherine Hunter is due to appear later in the series as his mother Eady.
