Good news! It seems, Immoral Adaptation has found its prince. It was announced that Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey is in talks to play the handsome and carefree Prince Fiyero in the upcoming adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. He will act together Cynthia Erivo like Elphaba and Ariana Grande like Glinda.
Bailey is a theater veteran who first appeared in the RSC production. Christmas song as a child and shortly after his West End debut in Outcasts like Gavroche. Most recently, he starred in Rooster at London’s Ambassador Theatre. However, despite his many theater roles, most viewers will recognize Bailey from his starring role in Netflix’s hit romantic drama The Regency. Bridgertonwhere he plays Anthony, Viscount Bridgerton, the eldest brother of the titular family.
Although he appeared in the first two seasons and is confirmed to appear in the third, which is currently filming, it was in the second season that Bailey took center stage as the male lead in the season’s main novel, opposite Simone AshleyKeith Sharma. Although many, including myself, felt that the second season lingered too much on the love triangle between Anthony, Kate and her sister Edwina (Charitra Chandran), his chemistry with Ashley was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the season. If there’s one thing Bailey has shown he can do very well, it’s romantic angst and angst, what he’s going to need as Immoral the films explore Fiyero and Elphaba’s blossoming romance against the backdrop of political tensions in Oz, and Fiyero’s apparent affection for Elphaba’s best friend Glinda. Jonathan Bailey, longing and love triangle? Oh yeah, that sounds familiar Bridgerton fans.
This was announced in the spring Immoral director John M. Chu that the team decided to split the film into a two-part adaptation to do justice to the material. While it may just be a matter of taking your time with the story, it could also be that the storytellers are looking for a way to weave aspects from Gregory Maguirethe original novel on which the musical is based. Given that they are very different - the book is much heavier and much darker - it will be interesting to see what balance, if any, is achieved.
Of the choice, Chu said:
“As we have been preparing this production over the past year, it has become increasingly clear that it is impossible to squeeze the story of The Wicked into one film without doing real damage to it. […] So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas […] With more space, we can tell the Wicked story the way it was meant to be told, bringing even more depth and surprise to these beloved characters’ journeys.”
Immoral The first part is expected to be released in December 2024, and the second part in December 2025. In the meantime, check out the original Broadway cast. Norbert Leo Butz as well as Idina Menzel sing the Fiyero and Elphaba duet “As Long As You’re Mine” below:
