ABC commissioned a series of legal-themed spin-offs featuring women. good doctor titled good lawyer, Deadline informs. The new show will feature original producers from good doctorincluding David Shore as well as Liz Friedman. The news came shortly after the spin-off of the popular ABC series. Newbie was announced.
good doctor stars Freddie Highmore as Surgeon Dr. Sean Murphy, an autistic resident surgeon with mental powers. With support, he eventually decides to move to the city to work under the tutelage of Dr. Aaron Glassman at the respected St. Bonaventure Hospital. With skepticism from colleagues about his ability to do the job, the young doctor must find a way to connect with those around him and prove his skills to the rest of the surgical team. The show explores what it’s like to have an invisible disability and how it affects people in their professional and personal lives.
good lawyer will follow a somewhat similar character with Joni, a lawyer hired by a law firm that represents Dr. Glassman and Dr. Murphy. As an active young lawyer who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder that affects every aspect of her life, Joni faces discrimination in the workplace and must fight to keep her job. Janet’s cynical boss and seasoned attorney is hesitant to trust her due to her frustration. Despite superficial similarities, the relationship between Joni and Janet will be very different from the dynamic between Murphy and Glassman in good doctor and will most likely lead to a very different view of disability in the workplace.
News of the series comes almost a year after the former president of Sony TV Studios Jeff Frost discussed the possibility of a spin-off good doctor last year, saying “it’s always been possible” and the studio “would love to see it happen”. He then mentioned that he didn’t want to create anything that would “affect the mother ship”, but there is definitely potential for a spin-off.
The spin-off is based on an original idea, just like the Korean series that good doctor based on the fact that it didn’t have a spin-off. Friedman will executive produce with Shore and Eric Gunn, who will executive produce Shore Z Prods. Sony Pictures TV will also produce the series with Shore Z.
