The Marvel Cinematic Universe is constantly growing and constantly adding new characters, some of which are completely original, such as Layla from moon knight, or Darcy from Thor. Naturally, however, most of them are directly from Marvel comics, whose introductions are either pleasant surprises or long-awaited fan favorites. When it comes to the latter, it’s often because one character appears on screen and fans imagine others from the comics teaming up with him.
Following the most recent MCU announcements at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, many fans have been theorizing about supergroups like the Young Avengers, the X-Men, and the recently confirmed Thunderbolts. However, some of the coolest collaborations aren’t these big, epic teams, but instead proving that sometimes two are enough.
What does it mean to be worthy?
Introduced in 1983 in issue #337 of Thor Vol.1, Beta Ray Bill is the chosen champion and protector of his people, the Corbinites. Being both an alien and a cyborg, Bill has many abilities, the most interesting of which is that he is one of the few creatures worthy of the mighty hammer Mjolnir. Befriending the Asgardians, Bill takes on the form of Thor and fights alongside him many times.
While he hasn’t been officially introduced into the MCU yet, one of the huge carved faces on the outside of Hulk’s tower Thor: Ragnarok bears an uncanny resemblance to Beta Ray Bill. Not only that, but the weapon that the Asgardians gave Bill is none other than Thunderbolt, Thor’s current weapon in the MCU.
Way of the Spider
Shang-Chi and Spider-Man are used to fighting on the same team. However, once in the comics, during the “Isle of Spiders” event, the webslinger was found to be without spider sense. At Madame Web’s suggestion, Spider-Man went to Shang-Chi’s training to make up for it. Together, the two developed a personalized martial art called “The Way of the Spider”.
In the MCU, the two of them haven’t met yet, although it’s still early since there was only one. shang chi movie. When they eventually meet, it will no doubt be exciting to see two of the coolest characters, not to mention the most talented actors, on screen together. It may even be closer than expected as Sony is about to introduce Madame Web in 2023.
Same names, different faces
With his first full appearance in Captain America: Sam Wilson Vol. 1 #6, Joaquin Torres became the new Falcon. As the title of the series suggests, this happened shortly after the original Falcon, Sam Wilson, became Captain America. With the new Falcon as his ally, they proved to be just as natural partners as the original duo.
The two have technically already met in the MCU, with Joaquin Torres introduced in Falcon and Winter Soldier. However, they have yet to truly unite in full force. It’s probably not that far off since Sam Wilson has already become Captain America in the MCU.
King and queen
In the comics, Black Panther is mostly associated with the Avengers, while Storm is mostly associated with the X-Men. Regardless, they actually met long before they became their superheroes when they saved each other from kidnappers. They will eventually get married and fight together many times, even if they later break up.
Before Black Panther: Wakanda Forever turns out, the fate of the Black Panther in the MCU is unclear due to the tragic death Chadwick Boseman. However, with the film’s many characters potentially taking on the Black Panther mantle and the expected arrival of the X-Men in the MCU, this team might not be all that far off.
Small misunderstanding
When Maya Lopez, also known as Echo, was a child, her father was killed by Wilson Fisk. Fisk then took her in and trained her to work for him. Fisk later convinced Echo that Daredevil killed her father in an attempt to get her to kill him. After they got into a fight and eventually sorted out the whole mess, they became strong allies and Echo retaliated with a bullet to the face of Fisk.
If this backstory sounds familiar, it’s because it was adapted into the MCU. Hawkeye series in which the role of Daredevil is replaced by Hawkeye. However, as Daredevil is set to join a number of series, including Echo in 2023, the two should be able to skip the part where she tries to kill him and team up.
Enemy of my enemy
Venom is a prominent member of Spider-Man’s Rogue Gallery, so it might be hard to imagine them working together. However, it’s not unheard of, but it’s usually just fighting an enemy that threatens both of them. For example, when Venom’s bloodthirsty offspring, Carnage, began wreaking havoc across the city, Venom and Spider-Man had no choice but to team up and stop him.
This unification actually almost happened in Spiderman: No Way Home. During the battle for the Statue of Liberty, it was planned Tom HardyVenom joined the fight, but his appearance was unfortunately cut. However, there is still hope that they will meet soon, as Venom did indeed leave a part of his symbiote behind when he was sent back to his universe. Besides, who knows what will happen in Sony’s Spider-Verse?
From America to Atlantis
While it may seem like an odd duo, Captain America and Namor the Sub-Mariner have actually teamed up a few times in the comics. They first met during World War II when Captain America was part of a group called the Invaders. Namor also joined the team, and together they took on villainous factions such as the Thule Society.
As it turns out, Namor is due to appear later this year in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Although Steve Rogers has retired and there has been no mention of his past encounters with Namor, the new Captain America, Sam Wilson, may team up with him in the future. If so, it will be interesting to see how their different personalities interact.
Gods, gods, gods!
Going back to the 1960s, when Thor comics were called Journey into Mystery, it seemed like the God of Thunder and Hercules were always at odds. In their first joint release, they met and immediately began to fight. Although they would have many more battles, the Gods would actually have a close bond, albeit a rival one.
Thanks to Thor: Love and Thunder, various gods from many other mythologies were represented, including Zeus. Of course, it was only after the post-credits scene that we saw Brett Goldstein”Hercules” for the first time. Since he vowed revenge on Thor for attacking his father, chances are we’ll see their first battle on screen sooner rather than later.
Marvel Marvels
First appearing in comics in 2014, Kamala Khan is a superhero inspired by her idol Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers. After gaining the title of Ms. Marvel, Kamala would eventually meet up with Carol Danvers and team up with her to rescue Kamala’s brother. Captain Marvel then became Kamala’s mentor and the two became very close, at least until the second Civil War event.
Carol Danvers has been a significant part of the MCU for some time now, assisting in the battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. In addition, thanks to their own show Ms. Marveldebuted Kamala Khan. Not only that, but the series’ post-credits scene set up the upcoming movie. Miracleswhere they will no doubt work together.
Spider Pool
Since they are arguably two of the most popular Marvel characters, putting Spider-Man and Deadpool together is a no-brainer. Their senses of humor complement each other, their costumes are very similar, and of course they are very comfortable. They’ve had their ups and downs since their first official meeting in Cable & Deadpool #24, but they’ve become an iconic duo.
Next Spiderman: No Way Home, Tom HollandSpider-Man is finally a superhero. Plus though Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness did not show a mercenary with a mouth, as many fans expected, Deadpool 3 on the horizon. Spider-Man is expected to be a major player in the upcoming Multiverse saga, so fans won’t have to wait too long for their romance to become official.
