The film is about a girl who must prevent her Bat Mitzvah plans from falling apart and threatening to ruin one of the most important moments of her life.
Rosenblum’s coming-of-age novel follows Stacy Friedman, a young girl excited about her Bat Mitzvah, a Jewish religious holiday commemorating the girl’s thirteenth birthday. A party represents the first step towards adulthood, and for future teens, it’s an opportunity to celebrate with close friends like there’s no tomorrow. So when things start to spiral out of control, Stacey feels like her whole life is in ruins. Tragedy begins when Stacey sees her best friend Lydia kiss her love. This event leads to Stacey canceling Lydia’s invitation to her Bat Mitzvah, giving the book and movie its title.
Worried about the chaos surrounding her Bat Mitzvah, Stacey consults with Rabbi Sherwin, who asks the girl to do three good deeds before the party. As such, the book is about Stacey trying to follow the rabbi’s advice, learning to cope with adversity, and cherishing the family members and friends that are truly important to her life.
