A new satellite from China uses a laser. What can an orbital titan do?

Must read

China has tested a new type of satellite that uses lasers to transmit data even faster. The experimental method is to allow the machine to achieve breakneck data transfer rates to Earth.

The People’s Republic of China has developed a new satellite data transmission method. The use of advanced lasers should be a real breakthrough in telecommunications, because they can greatly accelerate the transfer of data from orbit.

Chinese satellite transmits data using a laser - it’s 10 times faster than competitors

The new type of satellite was developed by state-owned Changguang Satellite Technology, which recently announced a successful in-orbit test. It is intended to be “a huge milestone in the development of space technology.”

The proven data transmission method uses a precise laser beam to achieve breakneck speed. Typically, these types of devices use microwaves, which do not require precise pointing, but also provide less transmission.

In a recent experiment, researchers at Aerospace Information Research (AIR) launched a laser beam from the Jilin-1 MF02A04 satellite. The data were obtained by a specially prepared station located on the surface of the Earth. Test connections lasted about 100 seconds.

Data from Changguang engineers shows that the system reaches speeds of up to 10Gbps. This is ten times more than the previous bandwidth limit. And it was China who wanted to increase the transfer of information.

China is expanding its satellites

The unit used in the test is just one machine belonging to Jilin-1, the largest constellation of orbiting satellites in the world. In addition to communications, China uses many devices for a number of other tasks.

As recalled by state media, the country uses Jilin-1, including for orbital imaging, weather and natural disaster monitoring, and space images are even used for urban planning of cities and other infrastructure.

The introduction of wide laser communications in the constellation Jilin-1 could be a huge breakthrough for China.
