Energy from space is sent to Earth. This is a new Japanese idea

Must read

Japanese scientists are getting closer to sending electricity from orbit to Earth. Already in 2025, the first tests of a satellite power station should take place, which will wirelessly transmit energy over a distance of over 36,000 km.

Japanese scientists, along with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), are approaching a huge breakthrough. Researchers want to develop a way to collect electricity from space and send it to Earth. How is this possible?

The Japanese want to send electricity from space to Earth

The idea of launching a huge solar power plant into Earth orbit is not new, as American physicists theorized about a similar concept as early as 1968. However, they quickly ran into a problem - how to send electricity from orbit to Earth, where it is really needed?

This is where the tricky way begins, with which the Japanese are experimenting. According to their plan, the energy satellite should be equipped with a microwave emitter - yes, known from the stoves that heat our food. The generated waves will be received by a suitable station on Earth and then converted back into electricity. Microwaves are ideal for this task, because they are not interfered with by clouds or other weather phenomena of our planet.

As the Nikkei website recalls, the first successes of the technology were achieved already in 2015. Then the scientists successfully put into action … an electric kettle. However, the 1.8 kilowatts of energy required to boil tea did not come from the outlet. Electricity was transmitted wirelessly over a distance of more than 50 meters. Now the country is ready for much more

The next step, which should take place in the near future, is to try to send energy to a distance of 1 kilometer vertically. After that it will be 5 km. As the head of the research group at Kyoto University, Naoki Shinohara, points out, the distance will eventually be increased to 36,000 kilometers - the orbit of the Earth.

The first satellite test should take place in 2025. Then the orbital unit must make the first attempts to send electricity to the station prepared on the ground.
