On January 24, at the British shipyard of the Babcock concern in the Scottish city of Rosyth, a ceremony was held to launch the process of cutting sheets for the construction of the frigate HMS Active commissioned by the British Ministry of Defense. Few people then expected that in a few weeks it would turn out that the above-mentioned vessel could become a symbol of the beginning of a new British-Polish cooperation in the shipbuilding industries.
In mid-April, the British The Telegraph published an article that reported that some sections of the hull of the above ship would be built by the Polish PGZ Stocznia Wojenna Sp. z oo in Gdynia. For some experts, this did not come as a surprise, since it became known through unofficial channels that the Gdynia shipyard (owned by Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa) entered into an unspecified contract with Babcock International Group at the end of 2022.
However, no one gave details then, as now, which is connected with the specifics of cooperation. It should be remembered that the recipient of the ship is the British Royal Navy, whose command could reserve the publication of detailed information about the program. This is not unusual, since a similar procedure applies, for example. in Poland.
According to public statements coming from London (since 2019, when the contract for the construction of five frigates was signed), their construction was to be part of the reconstruction of British shipbuilding. For this reason, some experts suggested that the shipyard in Gdynia would not build sections for British ships, but elements for another unit of this type intended for export (more on that later).
Somewhat by chance, the British direction was indicated during a meeting of the parliamentary committee on maritime economy and inland navigation in the Polish Sejm. However, only the Telegraph publication sheds a full and accessible light on Anglo-Polish cooperation.
