When planning longer May holidays, remember that some shops will be closed on some days. Monday, May 1, when we celebrated Labor Day, was such an example. May 3 is also a public holiday. This means that in most stores we will not be shopping at this time.

Law prohibiting trading on Sundays and public holidays

The law prohibiting trading on Sundays and public holidays was passed in 2018. Since then, it has undergone many changes, including a reduction in the number of trading Sundays. The next one will take place on June 25, before the holidays. However, the ban on trading on public holidays remained unchanged. Therefore, on May 1 and 3, most shops remain closed.

Where will we shop on May 3rd?

Despite the ban on trade on Constitution Day, on May 3, points where we will make purchases will be open. The ban does not apply to post offices, but they must meet a certain condition. At least 40 percent of the profits must come from postal activities. In addition, confectioneries, ice cream parlors, flower shops and kiosks will be open on this day. There are a few more points where we will be shopping on May 3rd. They are:

  • gas stations;

  • small shops in the neighborhood while the owner is behind the counter;

  • some stores are franchised, such as Żabka or Carrefour Express.

May 3 is the penultimate day of the week with a ban on trading. On May 4, all shops and galleries will be open, as on any other working day. The next day the shops will be closed is May 7th.

What are the penalties for violating the trade ban?

For violation of the ban on trading on Sundays and holidays, financial penalties are provided. They range from PLN 1,000 to PLN 100,000. Property owners who repeatedly break the law may also face a penalty of restraint of liberty.
