WOKiK filed a case against the T-Mobile network. She accuses her of misleading customers.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Authority filed a case against T-Mobile, accusing it of misleading customers with the slogan “1200 GB of Internet for free for a year.”

“The benefits promised by the company differ from actual profits and are due to fees, the details of which consumers may not be properly informed. In fact, 100 GB internet packages are provided every month, for a maximum of 12 months, provided that the consumer periodically renews the offer, paying at least PLN 35 each time.

Controversial advertising

The promotion, which has been verified by the Competition and Consumer Protection Authority, is valid only on T-Mobile prepaid. The slogan “1200 GB of internet for free” appeared in advertisements broadcast on television, on the Internet, on billboards and at points of sale. Detailed terms and conditions remain virtually invisible, written in several times smaller font at the bottom of commercial materials, according to the WOC.

- After reading the advertisement, the consumer should have a general but realistic idea of the presented offer. Meanwhile, T-Mobile’s advertising slogan might be to get a one-time 1200 GB data package, rather than a dozen or so smaller packages, subject to periodic fee payments. If consumers immediately received full information about the promotion and knew that they needed to spend at least PLN 420 per year to get 100 GB of internet every month, they might hesitate to take advantage of the offer, says Tomasz Chrostny, president of UOKiK.

Penalty for T-Mobile

If the allegations against the T-Mobile network are confirmed, the network could face a hefty fine, up to 10 percent. annual turnover. The network did not change the content of the advertisements, despite signals from the Office, according to the WOC.
