Ukrainian hackers are specialists in cyber warfare, praises the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Mikhail Fedorov. Volunteers from the Ukrainian IT Army daily help the army, conduct reconnaissance and enter war criminals in the Book of Executioners.

Mykhailo Fedorov, Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Digital Development of Ukraine, highlights the importance of cyber activity in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, the politician recalls that Ukrainian hackers and volunteers from around the world who form the Ukrainian IT Army often provide key data that helps the military make the most important decisions. However, for security reasons, he did not want to talk about military details.

Ukrainian hackers compiled a list of war criminals who hacked into Russia

One of the most important aspects of cyber warfare is intelligence gathering. The hackers expanded the so-called Book of Executioners, which recorded the murders and torture of Ukrainians by Russian soldiers.

“We are doing this so that everyone knows who specifically invaded Ukraine and killed our people. Modern technologies help us identify Russian military weapons. Especially useful is facial recognition by artificial intelligence, which uses algorithms to interpret data from surveillance cameras, Fedorov emphasizes.

Another task is to collect evidence against Russian political leaders. IT incidents involving hackers from Russia can then be used in legal cases in international tribunals, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine believes.

The IT army also boasts of many activities in cyberspace that thwarted the plans of the Russian army or shut down key services in the aggressor’s country. These cyberattacks disorganize the Russians and make it easier to defend the country.

Once volunteers from the IT army “completely took over” the Russian platform RuTube, the local equivalent of YouTube, owned by Gazprom. The hackers took over the servers for almost a week and managed to clear the entry cards of employees who could not physically access the company’s headquarters.

Ukrainian hackers convey to ordinary Russians the truth about the war

Another area of activity in cyber warfare is to break through the propaganda of the Russian authorities. The term “special military operation” is still used in the state media.

“For Ukraine, it is extremely important to convey the truth to the Russians and fight hard against propaganda. We must break the support of President Vladimir Putin and those politicians who support the war,” Fedorov notes.
