Giant investment in a wind farm on the Baltic Sea is about to begin. Construction of the project by Baltic Power, of which PKN Orlen is a shareholder, will begin in 2024.
Not only the first Polish nuclear power plant, but also a giant wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The surroundings of Leba and Khochevo are awaiting two energy investments of key importance for energy security. The construction of the latter will begin in 2024.
Orlen to build a wind farm in the Baltic Sea
Baltic Power, a joint venture between PKN Orlen and Northland Power, has signed a contract to supply the first components needed to build a huge wind farm to be built in the Baltic Sea at the level of Leba. Standby agreements cover cables supplying power to the ground, turbines and plants receiving electricity generated on land. It is important that the investments are likely to be adjacent to the first Polish nuclear power plant. Thus, the electricity supplied from this region will be of key importance for the energy security of the country.
“About 80 turbines will make up our Baltic Power offshore wind farm. We signed an agreement for the reservation of one of the most modern turbines on the market with a capacity of 15 MW. Three revolutions of such a turbine is enough to charge an electric car. - we read in the announcement of PKN Orlen.
Polish companies will also build a farm
Both investments will also be a very important step towards the decarbonization of the Polish energy sector and thus meeting the emission conditions approved by the Member States of the European Union.
“We have already secured all the key elements of the offshore wind farm as part of a supply chain that also involves Polish companies.” PKN Orlen said in a communique.
President Daniel Obaitek also noted that the technologies used in the construction of the farm will be among the most modern in the world. “We are one of the first companies in the world to use the latest 15 MW turbines. The Baltic Power offshore wind farm will not only change the image of the Polish energy sector, but will also increase our security. We already have agreements to reserve all key components of this investment.” he wrote on Twitter.
