“We are not producing as much gas as we need,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in an interview with Radio Olsztyn. He stated that Poland has no influence on gas prices on world markets.
“We have no influence on the price, because we produce too little of the gas we need, less than 4 billion cubic meters, and we need 20 billion cubic meters. We have to import everything else,” Morawiecki said.
The situation on the gas market is now very difficult due to the war in Ukraine and the response of Gazprom, which turns off the tap to European countries. Prices, as the Prime Minister said, are now monstrously high.
gas bills
Morawiecki stressed that Poland is safe when it comes to gas supplies. New facilities, including the Baltic Pipe and the gas terminal in Swinoujscie, allow gas to be supplied from other directions.
The Prime Minister also recalled that, despite the high prices in the market, tariffs for individual consumers remain relatively low. On Friday, legislation was passed that expands the duties of the ERO President to approve tariffs for gas sales to residential consumers and strategic public institutions.
“The Polish state is doing everything to ensure that the final bill for the household is not so high that it does not grow two or three times, because sometimes these prices jump up just to keep them at a stable level. Higher, unfortunately, than a few years ago, but not as high as in many other countries.” The prime minister said.
What will the Germans do?
Germany is in a much worse position than Poland, as the prime minister also mentioned in an interview. After Gazprom limited supplies, there is no gas on the German market. And unlike the Polish energy sector, which is based mainly on coal, gas is the main raw material in Germany.
“This is happening before our eyes. Germany being blackmailed by the Russians, Germany has suffered a huge failure in its energy policy,” Morawiecki said.
