Excellent visibility in natural daylight, warm weather and lack of precipitation provide the driver with ideal weather conditions for confident, comfortable driving. In such conditions, unfortunately, it is easier to forget and press the gas pedal harder, which can have tragic consequences. High temperatures and blinding sunlight also have a negative impact on driving safety.
Paradoxically, good weather is a big test for drivers, because it is in such conditions that most accidents, including fatal ones, occur. Therefore, it is worth remembering what you should pay special attention to when driving.
In good weather, take your foot off the accelerator pedal and react quickly
Every year, most road traffic accidents occur on clear days and on dry roads with very good visibility of other road users. In 2020, 15,316 accidents were recorded in good weather conditions, more than 10,000 more than in cloudy weather.
Good weather conditions can create the illusion of safety on the road and thus effectively lull the vigilance of even the most experienced drivers.
In such conditions, the driver must judge the speed at which he is moving much more strictly, reducing it in order to be able to quickly react to the situation on the road, for example, start a braking maneuver early enough.
- Favorable weather conditions, of course, have a positive effect on comfort and a sense of confidence when driving a car. However, they may not be a signal to increase speed or drive recklessly. It is this behavior of drivers that poses the greatest threat to road safety. Let’s not underestimate this and, above all, slow down - says Adam Bernard, director of the Renault Driving School.
Adjust the temperature in the car
On hot days, make sure that the conditions inside the car do not reduce the driver’s concentration. To do this, adjust the temperature accordingly. Its optimum height in the car should be 20-22°C. Too high a temperature can cause hypoxia, mental discomfort, reduced motor performance and drowsiness.
Don’t be blind
On sunny days, you should also be careful that the blinding rays of the sun do not cause a dangerous loss of visibility while driving. In 2020, road users blinded by the sun caused 522 accidents. To minimize this kind of risk while driving, it is best to buy quality sunglasses with a UV filter and glare-reducing polarization for better vision.
