Which is safer: traveling alone or with a passenger?

Must read

When it comes to caring for the environment, it’s definitely better to drive a car in the company of several people. But when it comes to safety, the passenger can be a catalyst for trouble.

Driver distraction can be a serious safety hazard. The behavior of other people in the car also affects concentration while driving. It turns out that even a simple conversation can contribute to a traffic accident.

While vehicle occupants are the most common victims of road traffic crashes, in some situations they are the perpetrators. Every year there are accidents caused by passengers, in 2020 passengers caused 100 accidents in Poland, and in previous years even more than 100.

The presence of other people in the car while driving can also affect driving safety if it distracts the driver’s attention. Driver distraction is one of the leading causes of road traffic accidents worldwide.

What distracts the driver?

The cause of distraction can be anything that distracts the driver from driving, even momentarily, including traffic or the environment. An effective distraction can be, for example, using a smartphone, setting up navigation while driving, and eating and drinking while driving.

Passenger in the car

The driver’s behavior can be greatly influenced by other people riding with him. Interaction with passengers can put additional stress on the driver, impair his reflexes and slow down his reactions.

Talking to passengers can be distracting while driving. It is dangerous for the driver to pass objects, for example, by giving a child a toy or a drink. You should also avoid situations where the driver looks away from the road to look at what the passenger is showing him, and you should not take your hands off the steering wheel and gesticulate. It happens that the driver is involved in a quarrel, and even in a brawl or other physical contact with passengers. This can result in loss of steering control, sudden, unintentional changes in speed or lane.

– Many, especially inexperienced drivers, may be inclined to give in to the suggestions of passengers while driving, encouraging them to drive faster or recklessly. This is especially dangerous because in such conditions it is much easier to be inattentive and, therefore, make a tragic mistake while driving, says Adam Bernard, director of the Renault Driving School.

Be a passenger

Riders should remember that they, like the driver, are road users and that their behavior can affect driver response and driving safety. Therefore, it is important not to distract the driver in the car, for example, by talking to him, playing loud music, causing an argument or inciting the driver to take risky maneuvers. It is unacceptable to poke the driver, yell at him or grab the passenger behind the wheel. You should not get into a car if you know that the driver may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In such a situation, we must take the car keys from this person, it may also be necessary to call the police.
