More than 20,000 pieces are sold annually in Poland. new motorcycles. Buying such a car does not involve a big risk of getting a defective car. On the other hand, there are more than three times more used motorcycles sold in Poland. In such a situation, the buyer is at much greater risk of buying a defective vehicle. How to minimize the risk of falling during the purchase? We offer.
Similarly, the law protects the consumer when buying a used car. The principle of guarantee applies here, but in individual cases it works differently. Other rules govern transactions between private individuals and other professional motorbike dealers. When buying a vehicle from an entrepreneur, the consumer (final buyer) has broader rights than when buying from a private person. It doesn’t matter if the vehicle is new or used. If after the purchase we find hidden defects, you can always defend your rights in court.
First owner?
Among used motorcycles, cars bought in domestic car dealerships should be of the greatest interest, because the history of their use and maintenance is quite easy to trace. Such motorcycles are somewhat more expensive than imported drugs, and the price is the main factor in determining the deal. Before buying, if possible, it is always worth getting its VIN-number. It should be remembered that motorcycles not only have a sticker with a VIN number, but it is also stamped on the frame in a conspicuous place. If only the method of stamping is in doubt (curved, uneven signs), it is better to refuse such a purchase.
Using available systems, we can obtain data on the history of vehicles registered in Poland. There are also commercial databases, such as the carVertical platform, where it is worth checking the motorcycle history before buying. By detecting possible previous damage to the car, you can protect yourself from fraud or extortion.
Where to start inspecting a motorcycle?
First, let’s take an interest in the mileage of the car. As in the case of four wheels, unscrupulous sellers here also know how to “roll back” the total mileage counter. In our climatic conditions and a limited season, the average annual mileage of a motorcycle is estimated at 6-8 thousand km. However, in typical touring cars, especially the Adventure class, they are often much larger. Unlike cars, the life of a powertrain is relatively short, mileage over 50,000 km is already considered significant, mainly due to the fact that motorcycle powertrains are much more stressed than cars.
– When choosing a motorcycle older than 10 years, and these are most often bought in Poland, it is hard to believe that it has only 25-30 thousand miles. Although such a possibility cannot be ruled out, says Matas Buzelis, carVertical’s automotive expert.
If the paint on the fuel tank where it touches the knees, rubber footrests, or handlebar grips is badly worn, this indicates a significant amount of mileage. There is a theory that a motorcycle with numerous traces of use is “less suspicious” than a freshly painted one. If the colors and method of painting the body differ significantly from those for a given model and year of manufacture, this is very often a sign of previous motorcycle accidents. Manufacturers change some plastic body elements almost every year, so it’s worth comparing the car we are interested in with its catalog photos corresponding to this year. The differences found may point to past adventures.
watch closely
In most motorcycles, most of the components are clearly visible from all sides, so it is worth carefully inspecting the drive unit for leaks or sweating. Non-original screws or those showing signs of frequent unscrewing can cause distrust. We can also easily check the condition of brake pads and discs, transmission (sprocket), front suspension oil seals, tires. If these components are worn out—these are normal consumables that need to be replaced—then you’ll have to be prepared to spend extra money to keep your machine running.
- If during inspection we find any non-factory welds or paint marks on the motorcycle frame, we must refuse the purchase, regardless of price. Safety is paramount and marks like this indicate someone has repaired the frame in the past. The user has no guarantee that this was done correctly, says Matas Buzelis.
A trained ear will come in handy
After we have carefully examined the motorcycle, it is time to start the engine. Let’s do this whenever the device is cold. Difficult and slow starting may indicate a weak battery or a worn starter.
When smoke comes out of the exhaust tips after starting - no matter black or white - an overhaul is inevitably prepared. When, after starting, we hear suspicious sounds, such as knocking, shuffling, rumbling, then trouble is coming. An experienced mechanic will recognize by sounds whether the valves are ringing, whether the bushings are knocking, or maybe the clutch is closing. Therefore, when we do not feel able to assess the technical condition of the motorcycle, it is worth asking for help from a more experienced colleague or motorcycle mechanic. Such consultations will save you from many unnecessary frustrations and expenses.
Test Drive
At the end of the mandatory test drive. If during it we feel some kind of beating of the steering wheel, the gears will be fuzzy, we will hear the knock of the suspensions, the car will not turn well, and after releasing the steering wheel the motorcycle does not hold the track, then you should not buy it or let it prepare for a long and expensive repair.
- When buying, it is based on a cool head and a sober assessment of the situation. Contrary to appearances, these are not easy requirements, because in most cases a motorcycle is not an ordinary means of transportation, but a magical toy for big boys, says Matas Buzelis.
