Electric cars are superior to diesels. But gasoline still wins

Cars equipped with diesel engines are already giving way to electric vehicles in the European Union. However, the main type of fuel for cars remains gasoline.

All data is taken from ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association), and in Poland they are quoted by the Samara Institute for Automotive Market Research. As we read, registrations of new passenger electric vehicles (BEVs) in the EU grew by 16.4% in November 2023, reaching a total of 144,378 units. This increased the share of electric vehicles in the EU market to 16.3% in November. from 15 percent a year ago. Several markets contributed to this result, delivering double and triple digit percentage growth, most notably Belgium (+150.2%), which is now the fifth largest electrical market. However, sales of battery electric vehicles in Germany fell by 22.5%. Despite this, since the beginning of the year the number of registrations has reached almost 1.4 million units (plus 48.2% year on year), which is 14.2%. share of electricians in the EU market during this period.

Classic hybrids (HEV)

New registrations of internal combustion electric vehicles (HEVs) in the EU grew by 28.7% in November, driven by double-digit growth in the three largest markets: Germany (+38.4%), France (+35.8%) and Italy. (+30.2%). This led to a cumulative 29.9% increase in sales to nearly 2.5 million units in November. This means more than a quarter of the EU market share.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)

Sales of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) fell 22.1% last month. up to 72,002 pcs. Despite significant growth in Belgium (+43.8%) and France (+17.8%), this growth was not enough to offset the significant decline in registrations in Germany (-59.3%), the largest market for cars with this power source . As a result, the market share of plug-in hybrids fell from 11.1%. last year to 8.1 percent in November 2023.

Cars with gasoline engines…

The EU petrol car market grew by 4.2% in November 2023, despite a continued decline in market share, which stood at 32.7% last month. Key markets such as Italy (+20.2%) and Germany (+12.5%) recorded significant sales growth, contributing to the overall improvement in the performance of this type of drive. This brought cumulative sales (January-November) to 3.5 million units. This represents an 11.1% increase in registrations. and a market share of 35.7 percent. at the end of November this year.

… and diesel engines

The EU diesel car market continued its downward trend in November, contracting by 10.3%. This decline was observed in most EU markets, including the four largest: France (-28.3%), Spain (-22.8%), Italy (-7.4%) and Germany (-1%). Despite the overall decline, sales of diesel vehicles increased in some markets in Central and Eastern Europe, such as Poland (+13.8%). In November, the share of diesel cars in the EU market was 12.2%, down from 14.5%. same month last year.
