The Czech Republic has joined the countries of the European Union that accept upgraded Philips devices. Meanwhile, owners of old cars in Poland still use halogen bulbs.
From year to year, a list of countries allowing the replacement of traditional halogen lamps in used cars with so-called retrofits using LED technology. They are backed by better light quality, far greater durability and environmental considerations - retrofitting doesn’t need to be replaced as often as burnt-out conventional light bulbs and they don’t use harmful gases (halogens). Recall that we have long moved away from halogen lamps in home lighting.
The EU countries where modified cars can be legally used on public roads are Germany, Austria, Croatia and France. Due to the fact that retrofitting headlamps that were previously designed exclusively for halogen lamps is a form of conversion, the relevant authorities in individual countries have created lists of specific models in which such modifications have been tested and approved. Upgrading only two manufacturers, one of which is Philips, is also considered legal.
Germany led the way
Germany can be proud of an exemplary example of solving the problem of modernizing LED light bulbs. Infrequently, environmentalists, drivers, and the administration are satisfied with the changes made.
In Germany, a comprehensive test program carried out in collaboration with TUV Rheinland quickly confirmed the performance of the new Philips LED lamp, leading to its approval by the German Federal Road Transport Authority (KBA). The Type Approval Certificate “ABG” was issued by KBA based on the national regulation §22a StVZO allowing use in certain vehicle models. Austria and Croatia, and more recently France and the Czech Republic, have followed the same path.
In Poland, the case is still deadlocked and the proposed solutions imposing individual homologation obligations on each interested party seem unrealistic.
Philips modernization - the most important facts
Thanks to their unique design, Philips retrofit lamps fit perfectly into many existing headlamps without the need for adapters or connector rings. Built-in electronics provide a compact footprint, making it easy for DIYers and mechanics to install even in tight spaces - just plug and play.
Once installed, the Ultinon upgrade delivers up to 230 percent. brighter light than the legal minimum requirements for halogen lamps. A cool white beam with a color temperature of up to 5800 Kelvin increases visibility so drivers can see more, and the LED chips produced by Lumileds also for the OEM market for leading automakers (OEM Lumileds) provide a perfect beam pattern that shines without dazzling other participants road traffic. Philips Ultinon Pro6000 H7 and H4-LED are also more durable with a lifespan of 3000 hours.
