The CIA is helping to fight Putin: what is known about secret bases in Ukraine

Must read

Ukraine has created 12 spy bases near its border with Russia with the support of the American CIA, reports the New York Times (NYT). The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Kirill Budanov, was also once a member of the elite Ukrainian unit that trained the Central Intelligence Agency. The newspaper emphasizes that intelligence cooperation between Washington and Kiev is one of the pillars of Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.

The publication writes, citing sources in Ukraine, Europe and the United States, that the CIA and other intelligence agencies provide information necessary for missile attacks, track the movements of Russian troops and maintain spy networks.

The Central Intelligence Agency also helped train a new generation of Ukrainian spies working not only in Russia, but also in Europe, Cuba and other places where there are many Russians.

“Thanks to its network of spy bases, Kyiv has become one of Washington’s most important intelligence partners,” – writes the NYT and notes that the amount of intelligence obtained by the Ukrainians was greater than what the CIA facility in Kyiv could initially obtain.

The American newspaper reports that a network of spy bases in Ukraine began to be created eight years ago and gradually developed during the terms of three presidents – Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

American intelligence was initially reluctant to cooperate with the Ukrainians, fearing that they would be compromised and that contacts between Washington and Kyiv could provoke Russia.

However, Ukrainian intelligence officers did not give up trying to win the trust of the Americans. An important step was taken in 2015 by the then head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Valery Kondratyuk, who handed over a folder with top-secret documents to the deputy head of the CIA agency.

They contained information about the Russian Northern Fleet, including details of the latest nuclear submarine projects. The NYT writes that Kyiv convinced Washington, since later CIA agents regularly left meetings with Kondratyuk with backpacks full of documents.

The creation of spy bases has made the US embassy in Kyiv the best source of information about Russia, a former senior US official told reporters.

In November 2021, the CIA and British intelligence MI6 provided their Ukrainian partners with a general report in which they reported that Russia was planning a big war in Ukraine. The goal of the aggression is to overthrow the Ukrainian government and plant our own apostates in Kyiv. The report contained the names of those who were going to be killed and who was supposed to lead Ukraine. However, Vladimir Zelensky and some of his advisers were not convinced.
